Belated reply....
Tika- totally, and I felt no criticism at all. Was just critiquing your critique 'cause I think maybe you misunderstand the original point I was making about the beauty of the reps system as I know it. Maybe it's one of those conversations where two people are coming from the same place saying the same thing but just don't realize it.
But for me to try to explain further would probably just confuse the issue and dig a hole or make it seem like I have a lot invested in the issue, which I don't at all. Best to investigate that system yourself if you're curious.
I've got no interest in 'changing the forum' or anything like that. Which was pretty much the whole point to begin with.
I was just pointing out that, out of all the various forms of titles and prestige and whatnot that come with a forum, rep points are the one I'm familiar with that come with the least politics, and actually with no crowd politics at all, which is super refreshing. I've gotten all the fancy titles and awards and stuff before. It's all fine I guess, sort of, but I never asked for that stuff and just like to wander around growing, posting, and doing what I do the same as everyone else, and would rather not be in a popularity contest. Which is why when I get reps from a fellow member it often feels more meaningful than someone 'liking' some bunch of blather I wrote, or voting my plant as the best one because they know me better than the other guy or whatever. That was my plant in the contest, not me...
There will always be some sort of balancing act between having a forum be a constant pissing match, and having a way to give fun incentives and respect to members. Not sure where that line is but that's why my input is only worth 2c the same as everyone else's, thank god
