I'm thinking about cutting the plant down and freezing the whole thing

I ask because the speed and temperature you freeze fresh plants has a big effect on final product. If you let fresh frozen in a standard freezer thaw, you get a mess of soggy leaves. If you go that route, keep it frozen when you bag it.
Or, you know exactly what you're doing, and I should sit back and let you do your thing.

You’re not wrong Dabber for those who may not know, even if Gator does.
Freeze them fresh then straight into the ice water without letting them thaw before the wash
Wish I had enough freezer for that. Next year I hope to successfully schedule my fall grow to end near Christmas so I can do some fresh frozen over the holiday break.

My thing would be to freeze it in a walk-in and process it in the freezer, dry/frozen sift. I worked in a -30° when I was a kid. That sort of thing. Gator has a walk-in city to work with.
But then there'd be the problem of broken leaf matter getting knocked off in the sift and having the same soggy leaf bits in the catch.
But would leaving it in a walk-in desiccate the soggy leaf bits?
Gator time for some experimenting.

Some micro shots.
Dry sift first, from the 2fast Hot Cakes trimming.
Bubble hash from my wash day. Dried 7 days about to be pressed. A blend of plants.
Just thought it was interesting to see both, so I posted it 😎6 PhotosKIS mix organic living soil from Black Sallow soils in 7gal. pots

Um... Ice water hash outside? Wouldn't that make slush out of agitated ice water and ice out of agitated slush? Clog up the mesh with iced over trichomes?
What about using ice cubes for agitation but no water?
My very first and only attempt at fresh frozen was turning down the Kenmore and putting in a bubble bag of fresh trim. When things froze up, I worked the bag in the freezer. Proof of concept was there; space and larger quantities of trim were not.
Remember, city-boy mentality.Visne explicare?

My whole wash day was outside between -6c and -11c. That’s really what you want, not ice. One of the main points of IWH is to be more gentle with trichrome removal, to limit plant contamination.
Keeping things from freezing is a bit of a challenge. The washer was fine until the drain hose finally froze , and 5 gallon buckets of water take a long time to freeze. The bags and the pump sprayer I used to wash required attention to keep from freezing

Heat and pressing after washing and drying.
Just short of 10% return, my best so far.
30 grams of finished temple balls. Two 10 gram balls for storage and two 5g balls for consumption and sharing. I will let them rest for 30 days to do their thing before I sample.
This run was using about 40% Ice Cream Cake CBD, 30% Tropic Thunder, 10% Lillooet Landrace all buds. Plus about 20% Hot Cakes trim from the Going2fast run .
I used a 220 bag to catch leaves etc, then a 160, then down to 45 (my main work bag), to catch the full spectrum product I’m after over nine washes.7 PhotosLast edited by Smallgrow; 01-05-2026, 10:05 AM.KIS mix organic living soil from Black Sallow soils in 7gal. pots

Thanks @Ckbrew
I follow the Frenchy Cannoli method for my IWH
The way he teaches to press is to boil water , fill a wine bottle (carefully), and roll it over the hash with light pressure, basically the weight of the bottle is enough. You do that for 7-10 minutes repeated 3 times.
He created this system to make decarb “fool proof”. Following this process mimics the traditional techniques use over the ages. This part of traditional hash making is key to the magic that happens when you turn flower into heat pressed hash. Creating many compounds that are not found in the original flower.

Pressing on a wine bottle full of hot water has always given me the willies. Seems like it would break and I'd have to explain to the nurse who was stitching me up what I was trying to do. But that's what people do, eh?
I found this type of thing. Made for the job. Haven't used it but y'all are giving me inspiration. Maybe if I save up my hash?
First one that came from the search. What I can't find is a USB rechargeable heated one.

No way. Hair curling things are women's beauty products. Women get overcharged for everything. As much as I hate how the costs of things are going up, I wouldn't want to be a woman, financially I mean. These purpose made rolling pins are less than $20.

I haven’t had any problems with the wine bottle but I get the concern.
There are extremely expensive (like 250UsD) glass ones made for hash making, but I’ll stick with my free option or investigate you idea.
Frenchy had actual math and science behind the boiling water and wine bottle technique, attempting to get the correct amount of decarb happening

Another 23.5 g. Pressed and rolled 😅
50/50
Ice Cream Cake CBD
&
Orange Cali Sherbert CBD
This time I split the run into wash 1-4 the premium, and wash 5-8 the lower grade before pressing.
You can see the slightly more green tint of the 5-8 wash material in the before photo. Gator and Ckbrew it’s between Turkey Bags, that’s what you use to press it. Wax or parchment won’t work with the heat and stickyness. The Turkey bag are made to hold a Turkey and go in the oven and the hash can be unstuck from it if you let it cool a bit after pressing
if you want to learn more you can go to Frenchy’s site
Frenchy Cannoli was renown hash-maker, teacher and researcher on the history of cannabis concentrates in human society. His legacy continues through the work of the foundation established in his name.
All of his written work is here, including his hash process (the lost art of the Hashishin workshop articles), and other interesting history and science articles
As a cannabis historian, Frenchy enjoys writing about his travels in traditional hashish producing countries like Morocco, Nepal, and India. As a hash-maker he is always on a quest for more knowledge about the science behind the process of solventless bubble hash making. His work is open-source so h

Smallgrow I get you, wanting to stay traditional. I didn't know there is a special hash making hot rolling pin. I can't imagine why they would be $250! Oh, wait. It's for dope. There has to be a markup.
My research doesn't turn up anything over $70 and many under $20. Expand your search to vintage glass pins. There are some as large as wine bottles.
Of course, free is often the best way to go. And like I said, it's what people do.
Curiosity led me to a short video of Frenchy C. telling why he chose the wine bottle. What I gathered was he could see what he was doing through the glass. Whether it had something to do with controlling temperature, I couldn't tell. Only that his water was at 90° for pressing.Visne explicare?

Ya seeing what your doing is always good but the main point of the bottle with water, is that boiling water is effectively always the same starting temperature and therefore you can roughly calculate the needed amount time and of heat to complete the chemical changes your after. Which is a Partial decarb of the hash.
PS the expensive rolling pin is from “The Press Club” , everything they sell is high end and marked up of course for their market.

Geez! The one I see is $150. No bloody way.
