Hello all,
I have a quick question. I've dried my buds for about 8 days in a box with rh maintained between 50-60%. They are jarred now, Just wondering how long do I leave the lids off while burping? I don't have a hygrometer for my jars and they don't feel wet when inspecting. After 2 days I still have a hay smell. I know 2 day cure is nothing, just stating. Right now I leave the jars open long enough to inspect all 6 then I recap. Please advise and thanks for the replies in advance.
 
Do you have a hygrometer at all? If you do, get a grocery paper bag or a storage bin and set your opened jars in them. Place your hygrometer in there with them and close the bag/bin. Check in 15 minutes. Hope this helps!

I have that. Right now it's hooked up to my diy dry box. Tuturial coming soon. I could modify a lid and slide the probe through that and attach the lid to on jar at a time.
question, how long should I let said jar sit for rh to stabilize? I'm thinking like 24 hours, if so that will be 6 days before I get a reading on all jars.
 
I don't have that meter :o but When you check the plants open the jars in the beginning I kind of break up ones sticking it's about 5 minutes, I always smell them before I close them up you can smell mold if it's there. I've not had mold if the jar was wet take it out on a piece of foil let sit for a half hour. It takes a week to get rid of that green smell. You're almost home!:D
 
Can someone please explain the science behind why buds need to be put in jars to finish curing. If drying buds in grow tent, which I am, and the ambient temp and humidity is perfect, why can't the just continue to cure hanging upside down. What is "special" about finishing the cure in jars?
 
It's my understanding that curing is done to equalize the moisture content of the buds and burping is just adding some fresh air that is required until moisture content is stable.
The amount of time left open is very dependent on what you see/smell when you open the jar.
I open the jar- roll- to see is the contents are sticking/clumping. Check for any moisture drops and then cover, sometime right away.
 
During your cure" the marijuana will change in looks and smell and taste. 15 days for a short cure - and 30 days or more being the norm 62% RH is best for curing
 
Do yourself a favor and spend the 25 bucks on the caliber iv to be sure you are in the right range for curing! Magical stuff happens in that jar! Or so some of the experts say, but it makes sense! You wouldn't want that 4 month or so project to get moldy and ruin the whole thing! For the piece of mind, it's well worth it.
 
I took some readings using my humidity controller with a modified lid. I was able to check 2 jars before work leaving the jars for an hour a piece. Rh stabilized at 64%.
 
The only thing I have to add to the above responses is that I am now using two types of Boveda packs_ If I think I might have override the buds I put them in a jar with a 62% bag and then look at the meter 6 hrs later, then every 12 hrs for the first three days. If the humidity is still below 58% then I switch out the 58% bags for 62%.
I only leave the bags in the jars until they stabilize after about 3-4 days. Anyone have any experience with the 58% packets? Im wondering which I should use for long term storage_over 6 months....have been using the 62% and they work really nice. I leave the packers out for about 6 weeks and then put them back, checking the jars every 5-7 days. This has worked really well for me for last three grows.
 
I just received some 62's haven't used them yet. As stated in my last post, I'm holding 64 after about three days in the jars. I've read it's not good to use those packs in the first 4 weeks of the cure because it could compromise taste and smell. Any advice on that?
 
I've heard people say that, but lots of people swear by them because it saves you from a lot of possible mistakes. I'll just say this, I've done it with and without Boveda packs and the smell always comes out great :) I don't always use them, but I think they are a really great tool for new growers and also for places where the humidity is a little wonky :)
 
Ok so I've been curing for a week. Jars holding around 63%. Still smells like booty by the way and when I grind it up it kind of pulls apart not "grinds" up if that makes sense. Question do I still need to open daily or can I go to once or twice a week?
 
You mentioned the buds aren't grinding properly, which makes me wonder if they're not dry enough. When you shake the jars do the buds stick together? If so, they're too wet. The buds should never feel even a little moist on the outside. They should also never smell funky like ammonia, which is another sign they're too wet.

If not, you could try leaving the lids are for longer at a time. Maybe check in a few days, then a few days longer, then a week. The main thing before leaving the lids on longer at a time is to make sure buds aren't too wet so you don't get mold or anaerobic bacteria. I hope that helps!

I thought that myself that they may be too moist. I jarred them after they snapped off the main branch. No "stringy" things when I pulled them off. When I check the jars they dint feel moist at all. No ammonia smell just hay. And when I check the humidity inside the jars it's at 64 percent.
 
If you think their humidity has stabilized than it definitely can't hurt to keep them closed for longer, to allow the biological processes to do their thing. Just curious, what's the temperature and humidity where you live?
