Hello everyone..new to the blog...looking for some feed back...i have been indoors for two years now..used to be outdoors on a river island..beautiful spot but alot of traffic..had alot of problems with something digging up newly planted seedlings and pulling them completely out of the ground..dont thinkthey wanted the plant...fully intact laying beside hole...thw hole itself would be tore up like the were after pottins soil or something in the dirt..anyone else come across this??? would love to hear your stories thanks in advance
 
Some little varmint bastards go for the roots of plants and leave the plants. Back in my outdoor vegetable gardening days, gophers would take broccoli up to the stem.
About the only thing you can do short of random napalm explosions is harden your garden. Dig deep and line the bed with gravel and wire. Build up the sides with CMU's or other blocks. Look into chicken-wire cloches in case one of the little varmint bastards gets drunk and breaks ground to get into your garden bunker.
But do not completely rule out random napalm explosions.
 
Happens in my veggy garden. Either raccoons or possum. They can smell new dirt and think something buried something in the hole. My wife had a bleeding heart plant get dug up 4 times. Finally gave up and filled in the hole. It still got dug up. Should have put a trail cam there to figure out what it was.
 
This isn't a little varmint bastard site, but raccoons and opossums don't care about your roots. They care about the bugs in the soil the roots are growing in. They are also not so kind as to pull the plant, eat the roots, then put the plant back in the hole.
If you got plants​ but no roots, you got moles, voles, or gophers.
 
Agreed. I've had a cardinal flower actually shaking in the ground in front of me like a bugs bunny cartoon from voles. He did say the plants were intact though next to a tore up hole. I'm going possum.
 
I watches an entire jalapeno plant go down into the ground, my dog and a shovel chased it to the end of its tunnel she would tell me which way it went when the tunnel split I found it and she killed it, damn good dog!
 
I have had this as well, my thought was a mouse dig them out, though I put a not so kind trap in a pot (150 gallon) last year and caught a possum, but the holes were to big for a mouse. It was after other stuff a buried in the soil.
Had a plant in full on flower cut down by a rabbit looking for water once.
 
When that thing over near Russia and Ukraine started going off, there were videos of these sweet little old ladies in some sort of community work-together. The video taker person asked what they were doing.
It was an assembly line of one sweet little old lady shaving styro, another pouring some in a bottle, one adding gasoline, and the final putting a rag in it. They were making Molotov cocktails.
 
One word. MOTHBALLS. yeah they smell something in the dirt such as worms or grubs and go after them. A small cage made from chicken wire is the best option other than making them smell like your grandma's closet.
 
thank you everyone!!..was leaning toward possum or groundhog..have access to footholds ..really like to get back outside..love my indoor autos but would like to try for giant colas with what ive learned in last 2 years indoors
 
I suggest cage traps,then you can release the animals,body grips kill and foot holds only restrain them,if you don't know how to release them you will get hurt, trust me, I've been a trapper for years
 
When i grew outside i made sure the animals smelled me before they smelled anything else. Cat holes dug all around the little patch ill be tending will be full of "some of me" . I usually stay or visit for long periods of time. All the animals mentioned will not tolerate humans for long and where there is one animal there are more. I found that my presence and a quiet pellet gun sufficed well.
 
What do you do DM, roll around in the dirt? It's not a cat-human respect bond thing. They're afraid of you eating them.
Cats evacuate themselves on anything I touch. Stop talking about cats. Cats are not the damned issue! AAArrrggghhh... what the fuck am I dabbing?​
 
Non-cat city boy, here. You say cat hole and I think about all the piles of cat shit that never get picked up, but that's okay because cat owners who let their cats out of the house for other people to deal with... suck. Up there with people who spread the cat food over the neighborhood because they love cats so very much but are actually drawing wild animals and littering the place up with cans of rotten cat food.
I keep rereading and all I get is you pooping on a cat pile to get them to stop. Am I missing something important or should I just hush after my tirade?
