Max yields and cola development

Hey gang. I just finished my second harvest and have some observations. I pulled 17.5 oz out of my tent. Some off the cuff public math: 1k light divided by .5 ( max yield per watt) i get 500 grams. So with a 450 g harvest there is no room for yield increase without supplemental lighting. That was five five gallon plants. Some colas did not get as big as others. My question is should I grow one less plant next time? I suspect that i can get just as much weed off of a single plant even. It is just a matter of how long I'm willing to veg and train. Looking for input on efficiency in a 4x4 environment.
 
.5 grams per watt isn't considered a maximum yield- it's a sort of 'ok/pretty good' yield. A very good yield for a beginner. Nothing to complain about even if you're not- but definitely not any sort of an upper limit.
1 gram per watt is kind of the accepted gold standard. People of course do go beyond 1gram/watt, and there will always be stories from people saying they got 2 grams per watt or higher, which I don't believe, but who cares. It's the internet.
So yes- there is plenty of room for yield increase.
But you're right- it doesn't make much difference how many plants you grow. It could be one. It could be 32. The SOG method with lots of small plants can yield more (faster turnaround) but it's more work IMO.
I usually grow 4 plants per 4x4 space. Divides evenly.

I'll submit I could have grown for longer and increased yield. I'll state rather I'm not interested in higher yields but am interested in getting about the same amount of ripe bud with one or two less plants.
 
I think you can keep increasing that number. I'm new to indoor but I'm sure plant training and mainlining is a skill you can always improve to get better results. Also if you are aiming for yield you may consider heavy yielding strains. Congrats on the great harvest. Also. I don't think you can give your plants more light. You can calculate the lumens you got but a 1kw light is pretty much all the light they can process in a 4x4 space
 
I must have misunderstood the question then, it seemed from the title and the content that it was all about yield.

I like the size of plants I'm growing now. Ten gallon pots, four plants each per 4x4 (roughly) space. More time to focus on each plant, but they're not so big that you can't move them around and work with them.
I used to dream of growing one plant per light- but I'm running a perpetual grow and the logistics of growing a big plant in the veg room and then moving it into flowering are - its too much trouble.

Kind of takes a bunch of typing to explain... I have two 600w lights and made 8 individual scrog screen setups.
Each screen is 24"x19". I put four of them together under each light and that makes a scrogged area of 48" x 38", which is just what works out with the lighting and the space I have.
I've kind of moved away from the scrog thing in the last year and just use it for some strains, mainly the ones that tend to get droopy and floppy and not hold the buds up well in flowering, and some stretchy sativas when I'm short on time to do a lot of stretch control.

Short answer- about two feet high and roughly 4' feet surface area- with training and topping of course. You can grow them quite a lot bigger in a ten gallon pot but have to water more often and I want to be able to go away for the week and not have to water every three days.

Here's a Thai plant (pure sativa) I harvested the night before last. This is a standard size for me in a ten gallon pot.
