how to tell how much run off in coir

5 gallon container 1 gallon of run off. That's if it takes 5gallons to feed it. Five parts of how ever much you feed it. If you feed 5quarts, one quart of run off would be 20%. It's not an exact science for sure.

Agree with Sonnyhad. And sometimes our babies don't care so much if exact science is not followed. In cooking and other gardening, I often work with "approximate" amounts.

I just try to make sure I give enough to get a significant amount of runoff, but it's not pouring out. I think the actual amount of water you need to use depends a little bit based on your growing medium and how well it holds onto water :) I agree I don't think it's an exact science! Anything between 10-30% extra runoff will work great :)

I recently asked same question ( after 2 + years dealing with it)' my mix is Premium Cyco coco coir, 3 to 1 perlite, 5 gal smart pots ( black- don't care what anyone says the brown smart pots drain slower).?feed each approx 2 gals..sometimes 1 1/2 gal..never less. Runoff about 5 cups ( will verify next feed) and that is draining completely.
