Grow #1: Cookies Kush by Barney's Farm | 315W CMH | DWC

Really enjoying the whole process of growing. All plants looking bushy and resilient despite my many missteps along the way.

Nice journal, oc! I'd love to see pics of roots too. Have you tried the free sample of MegaCrop nutrients? I had really good results in DWC under CMH, and never had to adjust my pH.

Thanks for checking in. Is it ok to take a picture of the roots if I turn the cmh off and use flash on my camera? Seems reasonable.

I had some early discoloration which may have been the start of root rot. Part of the reason was that I was constantly picking up one of the plants to check ph and ppm. I'm a bit of a checker. Now I have a separate hole and getting less anxious about checking them over time.

Anyways they seemed to recover. Will take some pics later.

Haven't heard of MegaCrop nutrients. Will look it up. As far as nutrients go, my goal is to learn enough about powdered nutrients before I reach end of existing liquid nutrient bottles.

At this point I know there are powdered options available, but I don't know where to get them in my country (Canada).

Surely canada has Amazon Prime. I guess I just assume you do. We have several growers on the board who cant get anything in their countries. I would think Canada would now have a gluttony of grow shops popping up by now. Unless you live where its very rural. But The internet os your best friend when ordering for cheap.

We have Amazon Prime. Don't see anything from Mega Crop on there but I did learn that it's only about $12 shipping for 10kg Mega Crop. Not sure if there are any border rules against this type of material so will need to investigate.

I was so happy to see this is a powdered nutrient. Exactly what I was looking to learn more about and find over the coming weeks.

We do have a lot of grow shops popping up. The small handful I visited sell really over priced liquid nutrients.

Thanks again DingusKhan!

You're very welcome! Try this: https://greenleafnutrients.com/product/mega-crop/?v=7516fd43adaa

They will send you the 300g package for free (may charge a little shipping). If I remember correctly from about 2 years ago, the sample got me through a 4 month DWC grow that yielded 4 or 5 ounces. It comes mixes up brown, and it's a little unnerving to see your roots looking brown, but when you lift the root ball out, the roots are still (off) white and very happy. It's one part, so no veg, then flower mixes, except you can add a little flowering booster (or molasses).

Also, it's just plant fertilizer and contains nothing illegal. There is no reason they can't send it to any country.

I like to keep it all simple, and didn't do anything but the nutrients and molasses. But this shit will grow you some RICH, FLAVORFUL, STICKY ass buds, especially under your CMH.

I saw the free sample. Costs me $13 to ship. Not bad if 300g lasts 4 months! At the same time, it costs $15 to ship the 9.9kg bag so part of me feels like I should just go big.

They recommend molasses for GSC lineage so that's on my list of things to learn about.

When it comes to border, my concern is the duty and/or tarriffs. I figured it was legal but sometimes you can get hammered by extra fees. Will need to double check.

Getting really excited about this CMH! 🤪

They're really taking off. ✈ 😍

Date: Mar 5, 2019

Reservoir 1
ph: 6.00
ppm: 1252
temp: 22.1

Reservoir 2
ph: 6.06
ppm: 1241
temp: 21.5

Tent
temp: 25.6
rh: 61%

Adjustments
  • Added cold low ph 3-2-1 nutrient water until water level met bottom of net cups (both reservoirs)
  • Switched R1-2 from hole 3 to hole 2
  • Moved lights about 5-6" higher over past two days. 1-2" at a time based on growth/limen readings
Notes
All plants in reservoir 2 looking really good. Really happy with results so far.

Both plants in reservoir 1 showing brown spots and a couple fan leaves are pretty hurting at this point. I think the really mangled lower leaves are from ph adjustment mistakes early on. Not sure why the larger leaf on higher node getting the same though.

Too worried about damage to roots to look or take pics! 🤓

temp: 24.3

Reservoir 2
ph: 5.66
ppm: 1139
temp: 24.3

Tent
temp: 25.6
rh: 61%

Adjustments
  • Fresh water and nutes in reservoir 1
  • Recalibrated PH pens (they were off)
  • Moved light much closer after I realized I'm having ph problems instead of light burn
Notes
  • Broke the main branch of one of my nicer plants while doing LST. I was devastated. Duct taped her and seeing if she will pull through.
  • Reservoir got too hot over past couple days because I've had some personal stuff to deal with/no time to swap out cold bottles.
  • Need to find time to swap water in reservoir 2

They're not perfect but I love them and I'm learning. Looks like the one I broke is going to survive. 🤗

Date: Mar 11, 2019

Reservoir 1
ph: 5.96
ppm: 1059
temp: 22.8

Reservoir 2
ph: 6.17
ppm: 1095
temp: 22.8

Tent
temp: 26.8
rh: 47

Adjustments
  • Using smaller humidifier which turns on/off based on RH. Keeping it between 42 and 57 now
  • Daily fresh water top ups
  • Lots of frozen water bottle swapping
  • Increased overall water level in both reservoirs because plants I needed to dilute ppm
  • Automating equipment using smart outlets
  • Added a Waze web cam so I can check on my plants no matter where I am

You can remove the lower damaged leaves. The plant appears to have all its new growth looking great. Those brown leaves can go. Just keep on top of it and you will do great. And yes when life pulls you away it makes it really hard to keep up with them. Just have to do the best we can with what was given to us.

Have you cloned before? If not I recommend an aeroponic cloner. That plan sounds fantastic especially for a first grow, though do think about whether you enjoy this strain(how it grows, effects, smell) before committing to perpetuating it. Lots of high quality banks and genetics out there

No experience cloning. I have some rooting powder, rapid rooters heat mat and small dome. Will look into what you suggest.

As far as strain goes, I was really excited to try this one because it has GSC lineage. Still learning about the most helpful strains for what I'm trying to treat, but so far GSC and Gelato have been the best. This is less THC GSC with 2-3% CBD! 👌

Got some help determining when to flower (as part of a separate thread). One of the recommendations was to defoliate so I gave it a shot!

What do you think? One pic is right after (last night) and one is from today.

THANK YOU to everyone helping me as I go.
