If you have a couple exposed roots on top of soil is it a sign of bad things to come or just good air roots?

Nothing to worry about there! 
It's a common thing for them to do and it doesn't seem to cause any problems in the many plants I've grown that do it.

I think I see why it happened, I have 2 to 3 inches of hydricorn on top of soil so roots react to it as if it was soil also
That makes sense; the same thing happens in my grows pretty much every time I use hydroton/hydrocorn. It seems like those roots get close to the top of the medium and stop growing once they have nowhere to go.
