The point of me saying it was "a waste, in my opinion" is simple. Plants, in soil or hydro for that matter, do not drink 5-10 gallons of nuted water per week. baring extreme weather or circumstances. Even at a gallon a day that's not all nuted water. Since many reservoirs are in the 5-10 gallon, I run 7gal, it stands to reason that if you change a similar sized reservoir every week there is waste involved. Beyond that a simple PPM/EC check shows they haven't used all the nutes in the water in a week, they generally haven't used even half, let alone a majority of the nutes, so again waste. It's simply a fact of any water/nute system it's just more apparent in hydro.
The absolute perfect conversion would be to let them drink the entire res. and then refill, but that isn't practical, and would be a nightmare to even attempt to maintain. So some waste is going to be involved anyway.
The plants don't actually uptake water and nutes at the same ratio day to day let alone over the course of a week. But you can get that ratio closer than changing every week, It's clear when you get close to right by tracking top off water against applied nutes. There's still waste involved but it's close to optimized.
That was what I meant, it isn't a deciding factor, for me, but it is a consideration. The deciding factor for me is being involved in that manner with my grow makes me track stuff and stay engaged and focused, which is both highly beneficial and therapeutic for my condition.
And now I must go kill a cat. The ass jumped the barricade and ate my seedlings. Ok he isn't going to die, but his ass is excommunicated until I get my 2nd tent...
These are great discussions
