does quality of night period matter

I've successfully initiated flower and am not using a tent in legal Canada indoors..

I have heard people claim anything but pitch black night periods will herm your crop but i'm sure that's up to genetics because in nature it's pretty rare to be sheltered from moonlight.

thought I'd ask though.

will darker nights help in any way or so long as you aren't stressing or herming your ladies it's all good?
 
Pitch black! No light!
Moon light is a reflection of its former self and does not carry candle Watts, take a Lux meter outside in the full moon.

Nature is natural to a plant it's what it knows, you are creating a natural environment under artificial conditions and dim lights, light leaks, and especially cell phone lights in dark period Will cause big problems down the road.

I bumped my time and for two (2) nights my girls got a wakeup before I found it, I'm pushing two (2) extar weeks of flower and have nanners on one plant all because a little mistake at the wrong time.
 
My outside green house grow had light from spot lights and I had no issues but inside one grow I had an led light put me back in veg ,four times same grow different reasons all had to do with light leaks I ended up using the whole grow for oil , total dark go in your tent and close it up fix whatever light leaks you have

Honestly most hermies are not genetic and are caused by stressing the plant. Yes you need to block all light. I have had pinhole and zipper leaks reveg my plants and caused some to hermie. It's not a problem until it's a problem but when it happens it can ruin an entire crop. Having experienced it first hand i dont take chances anymore.
 
Hi Wibe...I haven't experienced this, but I've read that absolute darkness is required at all times while the plants are in flower. They respond to different types of light along the light spectrum. Even just a few seconds of the wrong kind of light during the dark periods of flower will cause the plant to revert to veg, or maybe even over stress and go hermie. Hope everything goes well.
 
Yup my last grow did the samething I told my wife the tyiniest leak will hermie my plants she said you are exaggerating I’m sure it takes more than that and then the nanners came this time around she is making sure we don’t make the same mistake. I let her doit just so she can see for herself cus I couldn’t convince her.

That said: with photo's
I have had full light switch come on for 2 hours, in the middle of the night for 3 nights (before I noticed) with no ill effects.
I have left the grow lights on, all night without ill effects.
I routinely, left the bottom tent windows open with no ill effects.

These days, I just plant auto's.
One less thing to worry about!
 
hey thanks for all the great replies..

i'm growing in a room off a hallway that gets no light.

the plants are in a nook of the room also so even any bouncing light from the rest of the house would have a long way to illuminate the ladies.

with the recent full moon i covered over two small windows that may have leaked that natural illumination as well as possibly distant (1/8 mile away) street lights.

if i walk in to tuck them in it's pitch black until my eyes adjust and even then i'm stumbling if i left some stuff out of place on the floor (even sober :> )
 
too much unzippinmg for me an i suspect i'll get bored of this hobby inside of 5-6 grows anyways.

i'll likely stick to a few outdoor strains anually though they look great along side some heirloom squash and brussel sprouts.

so as long as you dont herm tho no other proven benefit to zero light? i just noticed some small led's in the room like on chargers and a gigabit switch.

despite them being far from illuminating the "growing nook" i'll take precautions and cover up..no harm (or herm heh) yet so upward and onward.
 
I honestly feel like re veg or hermi happens is because of the 12/12 light cycle. Yes it works but plant is barely in flower mode and then one little leak sends it into veg or hermi. In nature the nights get longer. Cannabis is a short day long night flowering plant.

Cloud yup 13 on 11 off a bit better for me to make sure they got they’re 12. So start with 12 and add an hour that should doit and more towards the end.
 
So in playing the devils advocate, how do we know that 12 is the magic number and that 13 on wins? It’s an interesting idea and I’ve never come across that thought. Seeing that the 18/6 and 12/12 was always just presented as gospel
 
Farmall oops I meant 13 off and 11 on. So you start with 20 on 4 off then 18 on 6 off then 16 on 8 off then you get to 12/12 and finally 11 on 13 off. The theory behind it is to not stress your plant by jumping from 18/6 to 12/12. Kinda makes sense because in nature time changes little by little. Not my idea I got that from buildasoil.com. Have to admit haven’t done it enough to say it’s a big difference if any just sounds logical to me. What are your thoughts on that?
 
Cali well, it certainly sounds logical as our daylight does gradually reduce a few minutes each day beyond the equinox. I’ve got to find a source of data on whether or not a controlled indoor environment benefits from this type of switch. Without substantive support, to me, it is another theory but...darn it, there are so many variables to growing anything that it may be a genius breakthrough or another puff of smoke idea. I’d be willing to try it but it sure needs to have some tight controls. Clones, lights etc..

do you have any ideas on the time frame from 20/4 start down to 11/13? My first thoughts would be to divide the veg period into weekly segments and mark each for a time change
