Dangerous Animals vs Growing Outdoors

desertdan your pictures are STUNNING!! You're a great photographer!!! That lizard is amazing, and I love the tarantula: he's flicked all the urticating hairs off his back (I used to raise tarantulas). That pic of the lynx (?) in B&W is especially great composition.
 
Redwasp Red fire ants may be one of the worst critters we have around here. I got bit by them last year and had small open sores where they bit me. This year I got a few bites but because of the cannabis tincture I've been taking, they got swollen, but the swelling went down in a day. I was amazed at how much better my immune system handled the little bastards.

Other than that, we have dragonflys, praying mantises, toads, tiny lizards, and an occasional deer. Oh, and fking mosquitos. I live in Shangri La compared to the rest of you.
 
alltatup Sounds like you live in insect hell to me. I use Propolis for insect stuff on my skin and beard oil to keep the flies at bay...as well as most sentient beings. May I suggest a hat with corks dangling Aussie style. Just remove the bottles first...and don`t sneeze too hard :)
 
yes Bill we have lots of Moose it used to be a rarity to see one now its common, The one that layed on my plant likes to calf in the area ,then she moves out in august ,I was out hunting one day and I started walking out at dark ,well I got mixed up and went to far in one direction ,came up to a deer stand and was looking up at it when I heard a cougar growl now that will unnerve you I spun around so fast ,the shotgun came off my shoulder and I started talking to it like a bear ,backed up about 20 yards then turned to walk away and she growled again ,shit the gun got a round in the chamber , that apparently calmed her down ,and I'm still here
 
DAAS my dad had to have surgery because his kept hitting the water when he sat down lol , when I was a kid in Maine we had an indoor outhouse and we had to check for bees all the time lol
 
oldjarhead100 I`m confused mate. How do you talk to a bear? I didn`t understand that bit. Are moose friendly generally. I watched this one programme where this lad was out in the wilderness and he was walking along, looked up and saw a bear in the trees which he filmed, sat there in this tree watching him. I mean, got to be dangerous. What do you do with bears cos they can move pretty quick by all accounts. Is it a slow retreat so as not to spook them?
 
I got introduced to chiggers in NC we dont have a problem with them up here but I have gotten them or something like them a couple of times nasty little things
 
oldjarhead100 For me what is most apparent is just how many animals we have killed into oblivion on these Isles to find ourselves with so few predators. I mean, at present in the news is the dangers cows pose if they become pissed off with you...and that`s about it. But compared to the stories on here we really don`t have much to contend with. Hey Pagan while I was out watering yesterday I remembered I have a couple of bear pictures from a trail camera that were taken within 50 yards of my grow area, I know they are there so I bring my 45 just in case but I always make some noise on the way in ,as soon as I can figure out how to get them off of a external drive lol

Hey, O.J.H. At least you don't have the big ones up in your corner. and Pagen, you talk to them very politely. And yes they are quick, but not as quick as eight 45. hollow points. and it never hurts to have someone along with that runs slower than you !

Well, Pagen, what I did the one time I encountered a bear, was stand up on a picnic table to try to make myself appear bigger and made a lot of noise .... yelling & screaming like a madman is apparently as unappealing a display to bears as it is to humans. That's what I did .... right after I crapped my drawers.
 
Ojh - yeah we have cougars & bears here too. No moose, though. My grandfather used to hunt moose in Canada. He once told me, "Boy, the best place to kill a moose is within a hundred feet of a pickup truck."
 
oldjarhead100 Mate, I `ve been talking to some folk here and up North about this. We don`t get to hear this kinda thing over here you see. We don`t do things like that too well. My mate`s landlord blew a queen hornet to pieces yesterday with a 12" bore (Farmer so allowed to have a gun). Blasted it first time, stunned, vapourised with the second shot as well as putting a hole in the wood shed. Now, that was a hornet, think what he`d do if he had a problem with say snakes. Nope, not set over here for that. I`m actually thinking of going to Alaska to watch bears in the wild within the next couple of years. You have this as normal. Not envious though :D
 
PaganRich, Yeah, ,we even had a hunting stand that we call the bear tree, where alot of big
whitetail big bucks have been harvested before, over the years.
It's a gigantic old, old hollow cypress, tree, that's got to e at least 100years old.
It's got claw marks all over it, but it's from mostly small black bears, we even saw one that had a transmitter, around his neck, for tracking purposes.
