Dangerous Animals vs Growing Outdoors

desertdan, if you ever follow a blood trail, of a deer that's been shot with a broadhead, and the coyotes, get there before you do, I promise you will see some aggressive coyotes, they think that is their harvest, and not yours, while dragging my deer out of the woods ,I had to cut pieces of meat off of the deer ,and throw it at the coyotees, it slowed them down for a few minutes, cause they are fighting for that piece of meat.
But soon ,they are back, right behind you, while you are dragging ,the deer out.
Most of the time they are not aggressive, But after they see blood, and get a taste, you got serious problems, on your hands,
Coyotes, are mean where I live,
We see 5-6 snakes, every time we go in the woods. Remember, we are on the banks of the Mississippi River, very swampy, and rich with gators an snakes, they are no problems though., hungry for blood coyotes, are a big problem, in deer woods.
 
PaganRich, ever since, I was drafted, I have always looked under the toilet seat, you are right ,some bad ass, spiders, and even red wasps, love to hang out under that seat.Very tender spots for them to sting you or bite you down there, that's very close to the family jewels. Lol
Really pays to stay alert. When taking care of your business. Right PaganRich. ?
 
Yes coyotes are pretty bad animals. They are moving into the city here now. Saw one running across a 6 lane highway carrying a cat.

We also have started having an issue with wild hogs. They may not sound scary but if you corner one or injure it they can be one dangerous animal.

And yes people camp all the time. Honestly when I go out in the woods I am more concerned with the bugs. If you dont use repellant you will get completely eaten up in minutes. I think most people here are more concerned with bugs than all of the other things out there.
 
Yes, I didn't mention the biting gnats,stinging wasps and the black widow spiders. The gnats are a continuing nightmare and the Black Widows are more dangerous than the tarantulas because the are smaller more aggressive and pack a fierce poison. Not to mention the 5 kinds of scorpions we have around here. One should not put a shoe on without inspection inside first.
 
Yes the Brown Recluse spider is very bad here. We have black widows but the brown recluse likes to live in your garage, house, out house (yes still have one on our farm,) barns etc. They hide in boxes, under furniture, and anywhere else they can not be easily seen. If you arent careful you end up putting your hand right on one without noticing. My wedding band doesnt fit right because i got bit by one on my ring finger as a teenager. Even after going to the Dr my finger lost all the flesh on the part of my finger above the knuckle.
 
PaganRich, yeah, I'm kinda proud of my jewels, lol, even if they don't hang down, past my knees, like I heard they would, when I was about 14 years old, Lol
But they still get the job, done, ok.

Redwasp, yeah, wild hogs are hell, back in the day ,and still to this day, that's how you got rid of the evidence, is to throw, the dead bad guys, in the hog pen, not even any bones left, hogs eat every last drop, they don't mess around.
If you don't believe it, Google the klan, in Ms.And you will see for yourself, how they got rid of bodies, and it wasn't always Black people either, many sorry ass, white folks got fed to the hogs. I know that's horrible, but it's the truth.
 
Haven`t you got the Wandering Spider species getting closer towards the North? Name does give it away a bit. No offence lads but you wouldn`t get me happily living amongst all that nut rotting death and destruction. We get a pissed off squirral that might bite a dog and that makes the local newspapers. A quiet day, even the Nationals. No mate. In a country where a few leaves on the train rails can stop trains running, nut munching spiders called Black Widow (ffs) and their like would cause absolute mayhem. There`d be pandemonium. Irritable seagulls don`t seem so bad after this. Did see this roofer battle a rookery of well, rooks as he tried to fix a nearby roof. Like watching someone signalling with flags. He didn`t fall off though. Give him that :D

Lmao. Just makes things more interesting. We do have alot of people who wouldnt leave a major city for anything. Much less to go spend time in the woods. You just happen to have found a group of people here that spend almost all their time outdoors. Id rather be outside in the woods than anywhere else. Although i do like the beach, id rather be walking the banks of a river than walking down the beach.
 
PaganRich, yeah, I heard about those Brazilian spiders, being mean as hell, But around where I live, we got some called BrownRecluse, spiders, that like woodpiles, and getting in your shoes, and boots. That will eat your ass, up, It rots out a hole in your arm or foot or legs, bigger than a golf ball, whereever you get bit, some folks call it a fiddler spider, I know alot of folks bit by BrownRecluse, they all got holes, whereever they got bit to. They just as mean or meaner than a black widow, And they is plenty of them, but you don't go looking for them, but you damn sure teach your kids ,at a young age, to stay the f-ck away from them.
More folks get killed by waspbites. Over here than snake bites. You ain't never lived, until you drove a tractor, with a bush hog, Over a buried guinea wasp nest, that will get your attention.
But we been hearing about some bad bees. Coming from Mexico, alot of people around here are having a hard time ,getting enough bees ,to make honey,
PaganRich, mate, being in music, playing in all those festivals and concerts. All you life, you never had much time, to go to the woods. It is fun.
By I was born ,no choice of mine, in the woods, and that's about all I know about is the woods, sounds like Redwasp too.
I've been to a few cities, don't get me wrong, but that ain't me. I love the woods, and every wild ass, animal in them.

I guess you gathered by my screen name that I respect redwasps. Lol All stinging creatures for that matter. Redswasps have some of the worst attitudes ive ever seen in a bug though. Will go out of their way to get your ass.

No one has mentioned fireants. They are not deadly to most people. Some are allergic to them. And if you didnt move when you stepped on a fireant mound they would eventually kill you and Im pretty sure they would eat you. Once they get on you they will not let go and burn and itch like mad. And if you arent paying attention you will have 50 bites before you even notice. They are spreading farther north every year. As a kid you learn very fast to watch where you step and where you play.
 
As mundane as it seems (& we, in Virginia, have many of the critters mentioned here, so far, plus) the one that everyone needs to watch out for is the tick. You'll never even know he's bitten you (they have a local anaesthetic in their saliva -- also people, by the time symptoms appear, often don't even remember having been bitten)Then, you see him when you go to get in the shower & you pick him off & kill him, which can be quite a chore in itself. Then you take your shower & aside from the itching afterward, don't give him another thought. Then one day, a week or a month or even A YEAR later, you feel like you're coming down with something. You feel a little listless, maybe a little nauseous. Then you get sick one day from eating a hamburger or a pork chop (alpha gal). Then, in a few weeks or months or years, you can't eat mammal meat at all without puking or diarrhea. Or maybe you feel dizzy or a little disoriented. Or you get a rash or a fever. Any of these symptoms could mean any of a number of things but, if it is erlichiosis (transmitted by the Lone Star tick) & if it's left untreated it can be fatal. Ticks carry a host of infectious diseases (most of which are listed on the CDC website) which, if left improperly diagnosed & untreated can be fatal. Ticks kill humans & animals all across this country every day but they're not exotic or exciting or spectacular in any way, therefore, not newsworthy. Educate yourself about ticks & the diseases they carry. It could save your life or someone else's or your dog's. I have personally watched two dogs die from tick borne disease & lemme tell you, I don't ever want to see it again. They were horrible, painful & agonizingly protracted deaths.

Yes we talked about ticks in another thread. They are truly a horrible thing. You have to use alot of bug spray to keep them off of you as compared to mosquitoes.
 
Also, yellow jackets. I stepped on a yellow jacket nest once when I was about 12 or 13. Got stung 21 times and by the time I got home (15 minute walk) I had a 103° fever & my grandmother said I looked "like death warmed over". She took me to the emergency room where I was administered either epinephrine or its predecessor (I'm not sure epinephrine had been developed yet). Anyway, I very nearly died from it & it turned into a 3 day hospital stay for me. The lesson here : be aware of your surroundings & watch where you step. Make sure you have a quickly accessible escape route & if possible, carry an Epipen at all times in the woods.
 
Yep ,Lyme disease is a killr, animals like white-tail deer. Literally, have thousands of ticks on them, people get sick fron deer ticks every year.
When I was little. My Momma, used to put all of us kids in the same tub, and fill it damn near half full of clorox, it worked good on red bugs
too, or what some folk call chiggers.
Ps, that's what we did with all our young-uns too.
 
Yep Yellow Jackets sent me to the hospital once when i was a kid.

And chiggers are a bitch. Never tried the clorox bath. My mom would always put nail polish on them. Worked really well. Other than the fact that you were covered in nail polish. Lol
