Coconut oil and decarb temp?

Hello all, I'm making some coconut oil with my trim and putting it in capsules. If I was following the receipt on the GWE site, I would be cooking for three hours in a crock pot. The temp of a crock pot is around 250f. Why decarb first? It seems the decarb would happen in the crock pot?
 
The decarb process needs to be done first to produce the the strongest end product. Using an oven ensures a set temp and time for the decarb process to work to its fullest potential. The crock pot will decarb the weed as you use it to make the oil but it won't be as potent. Not all crock pots produce the same temp at the low setting. Weed needs to be decarbed at 225-250 F for 30 mins.
 
When I make coconut oil, decarb is done on a cookie sheet in oven at 245* F for 45 minutes. Then process for extraction. This ensures complete decarb.
 
Hm.. I hear what your saying. The thing is the oil gets to 250 degree f for 3 hours. Decarb is like Ckbrew said, 245 degree f for 45 minutes. It seems logical to assume the decarb still happens when using only oil and removing a step in the offical process. Just saying... Thanks for the input anyway. I'm still not convenced. : ) The different chemical process between the two is beyond me still.
 
The longer you decarb, the more the THC breaks down to CBN. My conjecture is 3 hours at 250° is too long for cooking weed unless you want to knock yourself out. Sounds like you're into a low, slow cook. Is there, perhaps, a side or after cooking sauce that can be edibleized?
Decarbing before making CO or butter makes an edible product you can smear on toast. That's the benefit I see to pre-decarb. Otherwise, your argument is one I've thought about. If I'm going to cook with it, it'll decarb when I'm cooking. Why do it before?

It sounds like you have wondered the same thing I'm posting here in the past. The breakdown to CBT is something else I will have to consider. I've done Everclear tincture in the past. This time I'm trying to get away from the expensibe 95% alcohol. Hm... Still don't understand how a 3 hour crockpot cooking at 250 degree f isn't all that's needed to decarb. Good little discussion anyway.
 
What I get from that information is just a way to make an edible in pill form.
Isn't there a method of making brownies where you just throw ground weed in the batter? I don't see a problem cooking in-situ. It just isn't the norm, I guess. The water/butter/dope bath method does not decarb your weed. Maybe that would work with CO?
There has to be heat involved, I guess, too. But not decarb heat. You 'have to' soften up the trichomes to be efficient. I make CO oil with shatter. Yeah, it's store bought, but it's boats easier, way stronger and more accurately dose-able. The only way the shatter will dissolve in CO over a reasonable amount of time is if I heat it. Otherwise, I guess you could leave your bud in CO in a warm enough place that the CO doesn't solidify.

When I decarb THCa, I use 225°F for 30 minutes. There is a graph floating around that indicates this time/temp maximizes THC conversion before it starts going to CBN.
That said, I do not decarb raw bud/trim when making RSO a la Rick Simpson. He said following his process method automatically decarbs the THCa and his tests show that this is true. I have never tested THCa vs THC in my RSO.
I will note it is kick ass STRONG.
I usually convert excess flower to dry ice hash or RSO. I use straight RSO for making edibles and infused MCT oil.
 
We probably saw the same/similar video. Crockpot by a window and a fan blowing over and they say not to dab RSO?
To get the same results, you need to know the temperature of his crock. What setting, I mean. Simply boiling off the alcohol at 173° will not decarb, nor will a slow boil setting. Gotta hit at least that 220°

I usually do science-based research before trying new grow or concentrate processes.
I also cheat. I have a small lab in my garage with a Blue-M lab oven that holds 225°F perfectly for decarbing. For RSO I quick wash with propanol to dissolve the trichomes and filter it using a Buchner funnel and one liter Pyrex filter flask on a vacuum pump. I put the THCa/propanol solution back in the filter flask on an electric lab hot plate, rubber stopper the top, and direct the boiled off alcohol vapor into an iced container through the vacuum port for reuse. I finish boil the propanol off the last 100-200 ml of solution in a beaker and test that no alcohol remains. Oh, yeah, exhaust hood running the whole time. This decarbs the THCa just fine.
But, ya know, maybe I'll decarb a batch first to see how it affects the finished product.

Using butter to extract does fully decard at a bit under 100⁰C for 4 hours. Additionally, doing so in water brings other benefits.

I use the old method on the stove. Even using this method only with leaves from a male plant will produce decent butter.
 
I tried it both ways with decarb and without and I wont say its a huge difference but the de-carbed weed was better with butter, gummies and coconut oil. Now that I know the decarb before doesnt hurt anything I figure why not, especially since I love the smell
 
I'll take what Allenpro said to the bank. There isn't a huge difference but to decarb prior to adding to coconut oil seems to be better... Adding the raw, not decarbed, weed to hot coconut oil in a crock just saves time and a bit of effort and it seems no one is completely sure of those results vs decarbing first, other than a feeling. I only grow a few plants at a time. My interest here is and will always be at a hobbiest level. I always thought the purpose of using butter or coconut oil was to extract the cannabinoids from the organic matter. The extraction can decarb to different levels depending on time and temp.

Are you extracting the cannabinoids and infusing it with the oil or butter of just adding it and leaving it in there?
 
Hi Bluey... I'm going to extract the THC cannabinoiids from some sugar leave I have from this years crop. I understand the graphs and am looking for a temp of 245 for about 45 minutes if I was to decarb in an oven. The question is, why decarb when you can but the sugar leaves right into the oil for 3 hours at the same temp of 245? Is it too long and possiblly changes the carrabinoids to CBT? Wouldn't this happen in any case if I do fuse with oil for 3 hours? It seems almost everyone decarbs and then infuses into the oil. I just don't see why everyone thinks this way. I mean, just put it in the oil at 245 degree for 3 hours, strain it and your done. Hope you are having a good weekend. Thanks for the input. : )
 
I understand that decarboxylation changes THCA and CBDA into THC and CBD. That A is acid. The body cannot absorb THCA and CBDA without decarboxylation. Heat is the agent that allows that change. That's why the decarb process is instant when smoking, right? You're question is interesting to me because it seems you are really referring about the potency of the end product. Maybe this a bro science issue, IDK. My understanding is weed will decarb as it is heated and fused into the oil but that process will not produce an end product as potent as weed that was decarbed first. Maybe you could run an experiment and share the results.
 
Glofnrl, Hi. I'm a small hobbiest. What I'm wondering is if the decarb is really needed if you are going to put your weed in oil and heat it to 245 degree for 3 hours. It seems there are a lot of people that say it needs to be decarbed first, but it seems that is being said because that's the way everyone is told to do it. I don't see the logic there. I will grant that decarbing weed gives you the most exact decarboxylation and control of that process. But, oil reciepts call for 245 degree weed in oil for 3 hours, which to me will do the same thing as decarbing. It may turn weed more into CBD with the oil for 3 hour story, but that would be the same result even if the weed was decarbed first. Basically, I don't feel my initial question has been answered, so I will continue to follow the herd and decarb first regardless if it's really needed or now. That is unless someone really knows through their own studies. Like I said, I'm a small hobbiest that does a few plants a year. I don't even have enough sugar leaf to do a half and half study with one half being decarbed and the other half just done only in oil, leading to a general can I tell a difference. Hm... maybe next year. Ha ha.
