CBD Grow

Kobayashi I've just been growing since July 2016, but I will say that doing six grows in a row has taught me a lot--about the dwc environment I grow in, different strains, nute lockout, root rot, gnats, and what to do when the power goes out (hurricane Matthew)!!!

Plants are at day 36 since germination. The first three pics are from the big growbox: I haven't had to do any training because the 6 growth tips on each plant are doing fine on their own so far. I've fallen in love with them. Closeups CBD Nordle and Afghan Kush.

The last pic below is the small grow box in which I'm attempting big things. Four plants have 6 growth tips and one has 5. This morning I nipped small growth tips down below; they are growing so vigorously that I know they will be fine with that and put all the energy into main growth tips. However, I've left on all fan leaves below.

My current philosophy: you can't have too many fan leaves. Since it's the dryest time of the year, I am not worried about humidity and leaves touching leaves. They are just growing so well, so why fk with success...

I did a lot of tucking, however, to expose all 35 growth tips. We're at 1.5 weeks flower, and I will keep nipping tips and an occasional fan leaf that has to go. We'll see how they look and what they need at the end of week 3 flower.

Those are beautiful plants Alltatup, so clean looking, I wouldn't do anything to them, they look fine, take a leaf or two later if you think you need to, they aren't hurting a thing if they aren't blocking growth tips.

Does Top Feed DWC run 7/24 or is it periodically? I've read that after a couple of months the TF benefit is reduced. I'm not sure even after all I've read whether it is on a feed schedule or it is continuously being feed by the solution in the reservoir. Could you please explain. I imagine there are times you need to run just PH water, in that case is it a water change on the spot or do you remove the plant into a new tank with PH H2O2 ? or do you do a gradual change? I do understand that water gets changed once a week as nutrients change or get adjusted.
Thanks for your help alltatup because TFDWC is the way I'm going to go from the start on the first grow. The only decision I haven't made is lighting. CMH or COB or LED and those concerns are strictly budgetary.
 
Paracelsus I removed the top feed from my small box and I agree with you: it's fairly useless to me. When they're small, until those roots start reaching the reservoir, I give them shots of water as needed. The top feed in my big box goes on twice a day for 5 minutes. Though I'm not really sure it works all the time...

I give a 24-hour flush as needed, if I see signs of nute lockout. Haven't had to so far on this grow, but I think I will give them a flush on Saturday and then add nutes on Sunday, because it's true what they say: plants love a little breather from the nutes. But I'm pretty conservative with nutes and never reach Advanced Nutes' recommended doses.

I can drain the reservoir in my big box by putting the pump into the drip feed mode and opening up a valve connected to a hose going into a bucket. I use a small wet vac with 2HP for the small box. I hold the roots back with one hand so they don't get sucked up. I change my water and nutes every Saturday, religiously.

The small box has 200 watt CFL bulb in it, and it does a great job. The big box uses 400 watt MH and HPS bulbs. (I took a portion of a small inheritance and invested in solar panels a year ago, and got 55% of the cost back from govt.)

Before I installed the chillers, root problems were chronic. Now the water stays at 68-69 degrees. For my environment, that was a necessary investment: it can get very hot in the summer. I keep the AC at 74 degrees and feel less guilty cuz of the solar panels. I have a 50-pint dehumidifier for flowering.

So consider how hot it will get in the summer months, and if you have a cooler place to grow rather than, for example, an upstairs room. But you've probably already thought of these things. Root rot is the scariest thing about DWC, and it can be horrifying.

How big will your reservoirs be, and how many are you going to have? You said you have a secret room for your grow: hope it's cool!!!
 
Thank You alltatup, every detail you just shared is very valuable, thanks for taking the time. I'm in an apartment on the top floor of a new building, everybody smokes pot on the floor so the odor won't be a big concern but I will be filtering and muffling and playing music 7/24 like I already do. It's a back spare room I once used to use for AIRBNB guests. So Summer temps will definitely be an issue. I had read about the cooler and frozen pepsi bottles but haven't studied that issue yet. I've thought abut solar facing out my eastern window ala Elon Musk and his battery but I don't have that kind of bread and I don''t plan on staying here forever.

Right now I am undecided on which lights to go with, until I do nothing is written in stone. I'm waiting to hear back from two manufacturers and I have been quoted for 3 CMH at 630Ws each with adjustable power. As far as heat goes a watt is a watt and the thermal conversion will indicate which system I eventually choose. I am thinking also of DIY COB lights from Maus5 or Rapid which for one 4x4 or 5x5 veg is twice the price of 3 Chinese 630W cmh to begin with. I think your going to love it. Both made in the USA with top quality parts ( i have checked fastidiously)

My space is 10x12x10H Ideally I'd like to cover 5x8 which 3 630W adjustable CMH will cover very well @$750 total for everything including shipping, but besides quality of the product and customer service from Taiwan China, I have environmental concerns about both MH and HID (read my last post).

I think my goal by the 3rd grow is four 10 gallon ala How Sirius Grows - 600W MH/HPS & Top-Fed DWC. This will be my model, I hope to maybe adapt it to a Scrog with two plants in each tank (I think I can do that by orientating the Manifold of each to go in opposite directions) but I will start with one each for the second grow. First I intend to run the system until I stabilize the environment and then I will plant seedlings and choose 2 to begin in two tanks. Also which way I go with the lights that will really decide how long till I reach capacity in my space. It always pays to go with quality but my budget will dictate how large I go how fast. I am definitely going to budget a chiller for the 2nd grow now that I have heard from you alltatup. Writing this has also helped me get a clear idea of what is ahead. BTW I live in a very urban area and we have many community gardens, one which I am responsible for, I also once had a biodynamic vegetable garden up north. I am not a total newb, just to indoor. It reminds me of when I once used to install high end fish tanks.

This is all very exciting and being able to share here really helps me keep my mouth shut in real life haha. This group of people from all over the world have really impressed me.

Paracelsus Wow, now I'm seriously concerned about the MH/HPS bulbs, wondering how much it would cost to convert the roommate to LED... That is some scarey information, and it never even occurred to me to worry about the environmental impact of the bulbs... Ignorance...

New building you say? Then you must have central air, which will help. My theory about the seeds I ended up with on my last grow due to the C99 turning hermie: it got too hot inside the box because the room was hotter because it was very hot outside and ac couldn't keep the room at 74 degrees. (Either I won't grow at that time of year again or I'll have to turn the thermostat down, which I don't want to do.)

I forgot to mention yesterday:
I put blackout shades on the windows.

Yeah the bulbs, I wouldn't convert until the bulbs life span runs. And I'd also think about the environmental impact of replacing something that works with another resource. I'm not looking for trouble but the actual chemicals used to coat and treat the silicon diode to manipulate it may be toxic as well. The guys email, the part about Rome having lead water pipes, so they poisened themselves and went mad. I thought that a great analogy have you seen the ocean of garbage that floats around the planet? it's terrible. But hey use the life of the bulb and dispose properly.

I just have a wall through ac at knee level and a roll around portable pos.. Maybe I'll do a high heat strain? or is it the hydro/nute element that is so temp sensitive? This is something I should know.

There is a new 12 story apartment building being finished right next to my community garden.. It was a big project and we have a 20X40 lot that used to belong to the church that was there. It was 150 years old and it was a strong community once. The garden was part of the rectory. it has been 3 years since it has been together because of destruction/construction. I can't wait.
 
An ac unit at knee level??? That's crazy. Place a fan strategically so that the cold air has a chance to go up before it falls.

You will discover what kind of environment you can create with choice of grow medium, heating/cooling tools and the climate where you live. You will be circulating air in a large room; I have two self-contained grow boxes, so my environment is significantly different from yours. Heat may not end up being an issue for you at all--but the way things are going, it probably will be. But perhaps not so much for the plants as for the roots, which is where the chiller comes in (if needed).
 
Actually the A/C is energy star efficent because its in the wall and cools at the level where people are sleeping as heat rises. With the tanks raised a few inches I hope they'll get great air circulation, my ceilings are high to draw the heat and vent to the outside window 7 feet below the roof, the room also has a walk in that's 36 x 60 for the tiny babies. It is going to be a process. Did you look at the Medical Mass Light ?

Yes, I did look at the light; it looks very good and the room sounds like an ideal grow room in the sky...

I was reviewing growing temperature literature, and had completely forgotten that above 80 degrees is not good during flowering, and I know that my grow room temps (inside boxes) were significantly above that. I harvested some great bud in spite of a few seeds, but now I realize that I have to keep fine-tuning my room as far as temperature is concerned. So I really may need to take a break from June thru August to avoid having flowering plants during the hottest time of the year. I have been growing steady since July 2016, so it may be good to plan a break. I think I can get in one more grow after these babies finish, and then take the hot months off... Get out of the grow room a little more, talk to some humans for a change...
