Auto defoliation best practices - First Timer

Hello everyone, I am at day 10 of my very first grow and would like some help cutting through all the chatter and contradictions I've read about autoflower defoliation. I've researched myself to death (as I do) and have made decisions on my growing style, nutrition, soils, etc. I'm in a 2x2x72 ACI tent so my goal will never be to get the biggest and mostest. Two old folks here, just puttering around, not needing pounds and pounds but I don't want to leave potential on the table either. My intention for this first grow is to settle in and see how the plant wants to behave, so I will be leaf tucking for the most part and using the included net for gentle LST if necessary to control the height of any overachievers.

What I haven't seen is any sort of consensus on defoliation for us beginners for autoflowers - how much, exactly when in their growth phases, whys and whynots for different LST methods, especially if we just want a good healthy plant that produces well and has a low risk of mildew and rot. On other user sites (that start with "R"), it runs the gamut from "don't do it, never for autos!", to "lollipop and defoliate the crap out of that sucker, no leaves!" with much of the info seemingly taken from the photoperiod methods.

Can you experienced auto growers share your best practices, especially as they relate to small space grows? Thank you!

Autos are best left alone IMO. What you’ve been doing sounds perfect, a little LST and leaf tucking is really all you need to do for a while. Autos are finicky and if you defoliate too much during vegetation it can trigger flowering. I’ve had my best success with autos the less I handled them.

Once they get 6 or 7 nodes I’ll remove the two big fan leaves at the top to expose the colas underneath to more light but that’s about all I remove until they start to flower. Once in flower I only remove what’s necessary

Thank you! What would you consider necessary? Once they are in flower, are you still trying to optimize light to lower bud sites or are you thinking more about air circulation at that point?

I’m not one to strip a plant of its solar panels. I remove the big fans in flower to optimize the light exposure but that’s about it.

You are spot on about defoliation guidance being all over the map for autos. I tend to fall into the category of a little but not a lot. I top after the 5th node and remove lower growth but that's about it. I like to let the plant take the fan leaves when it needs the energy they have stored, as long as they are not blocking a bud site.

Since this is your first run, if you are not interested in a huge harvest consider letting your plant grow out naturally one time to see how you and it performs. With autos you'll be growing again after about 90 days.

Thanks! I will most likely err on the side of caution as well just based on other gardening I've done.

As far as letting it grow out naturally, my plan for leaf tucking and maybe bending that one crazy top cola is as natural as I can force myself to be. Left unsupervised I'd be sitting inside that tent touching everything way too much. I just want to do something But I am really going to try not to do much interfering for this first grow, to get my feet wet and see how the first set of choices I made worked out.

I hear ya! I found out the true meaning of loving something to death. LOL. And I have learned that less is more. You have a solid plan it sounds like.

I'll agree with bboyfromwayback about the top two leaves once into flowering start. I only removed any leaves larger than my closed palm (4.5" width) that would block a bud site and not stay tucked.

Since it hasn't been asked yet, beyond the tent what other variables are going into your grow (light, medium, ventilation, temp controls, etc.)? What light source did you purchase? If it is an AC Infinity 2x2 LED light board, you will need to keep it closer to the plant since I've observed them to be underpowered for the space. My current grow has had the light less than the manual height says to keep it (18-24") per stage at around 17-13.5" above plant's highest point and so far the plant is growing much more than my previous grows. Now take into account the last two grows were FF giveaways from Twenty20 so not truly an auto variety but have grown 7 autos when first starting off. I've been working on getting the funds together for either the 3x3 LEE board (IONBOARD S33) or LED grow light (IONFRAME EVO4 bar version) since both will fit into the space but leaning towards the IONFRAME EVO4 for higher lighting wattage and being able to put the controller sensor into more the center of the plant for higher accuracy.
Started being scammed by www.lush.garden grow kit (Thankfully no longer doing business & link to parent company)
      Currently using:
AC Infinity 2x2x6 tent, 2x2 LED light, Controller 69 Pro,
T3 humidifier, CLOUDRAY S6, Gen 2, Cloudray S9 pair & Terraform control unit (AC/heat/dry/vent) Not in use currently.

I got the AC Infinity 2x2x72 growing kit, so it came with the vent and carbon filter, lights and controller. I need more control so I turned off the AI recipe and made my own schedules.

I got the PPFD Meter app and I'm using DLI to fiddle with the light position and intensity. Having no experience with this plant, I decided to just follow the DLI chart from the other app and keep an eye on it for signs of needing a change. Hopefully it's in the ballpark!

      Hey, Crafty.
I have grown autos outside in a greenhouse for four years. Never did anything to them except feed and water. Got lots of good bud.
For summer 2025, I had three extra Santa Marta Haze AF seedlings to experiment with by putting straight into my veggie garden soil. At node 5 or 6, I topped two, removing the apical meristem, while still in growth mode. One plant I left alone. Fall harvest of the topped two was twice the one not topped. IMO, topping is a valid way to increase yield with autos. You might hunt down some XXL AF's. You have a tall tent and the big autos yield more.

I'm definitely going to experiment with training and topping as well, I'm just trying to be a little hands off with this first grow so I don't cause more issues than I solve. It's good to hear your experience.

Unfortunately once you get the vent fan and filter and lights in there, the tent really has about 4 ft of usable height, but it's the perfect little kit for our space.
