First time grower, DWC setup, wondering about how much and when to remove fan leaves during flowering? My plants are a little overcrowded, however height is not the issue. I've already cleaned up everything underneath and have removed some fan leaves up top, spareinly. Did this over several days not all at once. Thanks.

Some experienced growers here defoliate severely but I would go easy on your first grow. I was a little too rough on last grow and will be more conservative this grow. Cut fan leaves blocking bud sites or tuck leaves out of the way.DIY grow space 2.5' X 3.5' X 6.5'
315 LEC
6" Vortex exhaust fan w/speed control
6" Carbon filter
3- 6" fans
humidifier
temp and humidity gauge
5 gal smart pots w/ FFOF soil
FF trio nutrients

Until you really get skilled at defoliating and get it down, I'd only practice trying it on one plant at a time and I'd read up a lot on it and dig through all the different points and opinions regarding it. Basically as it was put to me, it is a skill and an art, some people get it and can do amazing things with it, others can't and it doesn't work for them. Over time you learn when to fold a leaf out of the way or when to remove it completely, and I took the lessons I learned from growing and training my Bonsai to help me better train other plants as well. Time and experience really go a long way, just make sure you really concentrate on keeping your blade(s) clean and sterile so you don't open your plant up for other issues to take ahold. The only way to become the a good at anything is to read about it and learn all you can about it, and if it's something you love why not become an expert in it? The best place for anyone to start is at the beginning and make sure we didn't overlook anything, so let's go back to the basics.

Thanks, I am happy to hear others appreciate the ways I try to explain things, I started gardening many years ago and learned a lot along the way so I try to take what I know and use it to educate others with the hopes of putting more people's hands in touch with the food and medicine they grow to enjoy in turn. I was just reading today that chronic pain can be greatly reduced by gardening, and I thought how true that is.

My timeline is:
Lollipop as you place into flower tent.
Defoliate weeks #1 & #3 of 12/12.
After that, new leaves stop/slow and I only trim large fan leaves that block bud sites.
If you can look down from the top of the plant and see the medium, there is little need to trim. It's all bullshit - until you smoke it!

I'm in week five of flower and held off as long as I could by tucking fan leaves but gave them a very healthy trim today. They still may need a little more but I'll wait a bit now and just remove leaves here and there.
What happened to me was definitely a "rookie" mistake, too many plants in a smaller space. I germinated twice as many seeds as I thought I would grow, alomost all sprouted and I couldn't let them go. I added a couple more DWC buckets to my set up, and even put a few in dirt from local store, and just gave them water from my DWC reservoir like I would water a regular plant !
I have enough space and height in my grow room, but my DWC can't be moved now, it comes down to lighting. I've got two air cooled 600w, HPS. Cheapies from Amazon, but working great, along with two LED lights 1000w and 1200w equivalent, but actual draw of two combined is 600w. Once again, working great, no name from Amazon again. I also put three t5s, 4 bulbs per t5, around the sides for extra light.
I also have a 4 strains, blueberry, OG Kush, Amnesia, Critical Widow, which are a mix of sativa and indica dominate plants. Oh well, live and learn! I guess all I can really do now is hang on for the ride.

Thanks "alltat" for the positive feedback. As I said, first grow and any feedback, positive or constructive is always welcomed.
Also, I can't believe the different smells already, they are exactly as described by the provider. Blueberry smells like it sounds, amniesa is fruity citrus and critical widow has desiel smell. OG KUSH, not sure yet.

I dunno man, alot of people have opinions. I'm still new to this myself, so only advice I can give so far is what I been doing so far; I chop off anything that looks like it could block lights from reaching buds. When flowering, it's even easier to make decisions.Current grow: http://forum.growweedeasy.com/forum/...could-2nd-grow
