    Reducing tincture burn

I scored some Everclear* so have been reading instructions for making sublingual tincture. One thing I read a lot was how it burns, that people can't stand the taste and other bad things. I started with tincture from the dispensary back when and that didn't burn at all. Maybe it was glycerine based but I don't remember it being sweet either so, I got no idea... But as a used-to-be moonshiner I'd never drink 190 proof, I've seen what it does to your hands. I was wondering if after it's made why don't people just dilute it. I've no problem with barrel proof (130-145). I googled for reducing alcohol burn and, other than chasers which I don't think really works with sublingual, I read these ideas for drinking high proof alcohol: Using it freezing cold, consuming with salt (as with tequila) and dilution.

It's there any reason not to dilute alcohol tincture? Orange flavored from the dispensary was my favorite. Maybe mix three tinc to two flavor...

Do you have something you do to deal with the burn? I'm hoping you do and you'll share.

    * I've read that Everclear is illegal in NY State but the Everclear web site lists plenty places including the store I got it from. Maybe it was illegal but that was lifted for use as a covid sanitizer? So maybe if you couldn't get it before maybe you can now.

What is the volume of ethanol based tincture per dose? Are you talking about drops? Anything that is high percentage ethanol will burn under the tongue with out dilution. If this is what you are making then yes dilute it. Mixing it with food is a good alternative, but then we are no longer sublingual. For a SL dose that does not burn you would have to convert your ethanol extract to a different base. Glycerine is popular. Some people like MCT.
Don't worry, be happy, grow sticky buds.

Dispensary tincture was more of a squirt than drops. It was 10mg/ml so I'd draw between a half and a full dropper. I think it's easier hold a half dropper under my tongue than a full one. Other parts of the mouth absorb too but SL targets the many blood vessels underneath the tongue so it's best if you can keep the liquid there.

Last thing I made was canna chocolate-pecan turtles. Yummy and worked great but when I added up the calories of the ingredients it was over 3000 calories for the pan which lasted 10 days... I'm not skinny and don't need that many extra calories.

Dispensary tincture at 10mg/ml, usually there are limits on the concentration and total package quantity allowed to be sold depending on the regs where you are. When I make my own, I strive for 100mg/ml. The total volume of a dose is very small. With the dropper I use that works out to about 2mg/drop.

Somebody got hot and banned the high proof in many states. Cane Verde is a Mexican high proof that somehow got banned a few years ago. TJ, at least. I mean, TJ! I can buy nuclear hand grenades in TJ! I guess someone figures high proof is more dangerous than nuclear hand grenades.
Anyway. It is illegal to buy or sell but not illegal to have.

I cannot do the sublingual so I settled on peach flavored Yoplait. I add a bit of stripped bud for fiber.

That's a good idea. I love yogurt but I think I'll get my fiber from the raspberry fruit on the bottom kind.

Personally I only utilize alcohol as a means of extraction then remove it from the concentrate. For tinctures I mix decarbed concentrate with a carrier oil of choice, along with a bit sunflower lecithin. No burn and easily dosable, same method for edibles.

A rotovap as the primary to recover as much ethanol as possible then a heated vacuum chamber if it needs to be more shatter like. Normally just the first step then right to decarbing, that removes over 99% and makes it perfect for use in edibles, tinctures and topicals. But you can do evaporation without any of that with just a fan blowing over a tray or pan though you’ll lose the alcohol and it will take quite a while. If you introduce heat without doing so in a vacuum degradation along with safety becomes much larger concern.

Nice! I never heard of a rotovap so I googled it... I don't think I get it. Does the arm junction turn the samples flask? Should I assume it operates below boiling/distillation temps? IIRC my vacuum pump is a rotary with carbon vanes. It's a Gast so I can find out if it is explosion proof but I'm thinking no. I also have on of those air compressor vacuum generators but I expect that the junky air would contaminate the alcohol preventing reuse. I'm jealous of your equipment. I worked for a a while at a chemical plant but I did industrial quantities mostly running the big liquid mixing tank and bottling machine. I don't miss it. I hated the chemicals and my boss fussed because I took the time to read the SDS before i touched anything.

The boiling flask revolves (the 45° mounted larger round flask) that’s where the extract concentrates while the rest of the unit remains stationary. The ethanol collects in the smaller condensing flask. The boiling flask sits it the water/oil bath at a precise temp while the apparatus is under vacuum lowering the boiling temp of the ethanol, chilled water is pumped thru the condenser coil causing the ethanol to condense and fill the receiving flask. Vacuum pressure dictates the boiling point so you can boil ethanol at room temp but typically around 40° C, using a diaphragm pump along with a cold trap to eliminate pulling ethanol.
