Got Dogs. I prefer Kness though, as my trap of choice

Simple fact of my situation is that I live, quite literally, in the middle of the countryside. Obviously then, there's all sorts of shit living out there. All around me. As I used to tell my clients; " I can take care of ye Home. I can guard ye perimeters. But, I can't go out there and kill every rat in Leitrim. "

I have the same attitude about here. I actually watch the rats, doing their thing, yards from my gate. But, they're the rats out there. In Leitrim. Ten yards from my gate? And that single ditch they live in is 140 yards long. What then?

Rat I saw yesterday? I know where he lives. My chickens now live on that patch. But, now? That rat's crossed the line. He'll be dealt with.

Creatures I'm fine with. It's electricity that makes me nervous. Actually? I might even put my tent down in the stables! Damn! Why didn't I think of that?!? That's a bloody Brilliant idea!!! Wow! And, just like that; The weight of the whole fucking world has lifted from my shoulders!!!

    I've cracked it!!!

I live in the woods, all be it in a new house with 4’ of concrete above grade before the wood starts.
I prefer to keep the front lines of the mouse war outside my walls. I position poison traps every 10-15 feet around the perimeter of my house, they make extra large bait stations that are too big for dogs and bigger animals to mess with. This works very well for me.
I don’t love the poison route but for mice and ants I have found no other way.
Good luck, they can be a tough adversary.

Catch and release traps at hardware store work well for mice so they dont eat the poison and climb into walls then die.
edit: or eat the bait then get eaten by an owl or hawk.

Agreed, I’m not fond of the idea that other animals eat the poisoned mice, but catch and release, or even catch and garbage bag didn’t do the job for me. That’s when I went chemical

Lost a Barred owl last year to mouse poison and are red tail hawk a couple years before that.

Borax and sugar in a paste is an excellent ant killer.

I forgot about the live traps I have set out, then yesterday I got a reminder from a pair trying to find a way out, needs no bait just place them along the wall.
