What is it with the cookies

Damnit every time I grow a strain with gsc in the parents I run into this. Out of this run every plant is happy but this one. She's magic runtz from Roc Bud. Magic cookies is one of the parents. When I grew forum stomper and fastbuds gsc I had the same mid flower problem. I amend my soil with dolomite lime and ph my water to 6.5 to 7 during flower. I'm starting to think they may be sensitive to the LED's. Bottom half looks ok so far. What does the community think? Click image for larger version

My last auto run had the same issue. The light yellow tips could be light burn so yea could be sensitive.

I believe my recent auto was light sensitive as well.

I grew photo GSC about 4 years ago and they were temperamental little bitches. They really hated the temperature extremes that my balcony produces. I grew them during my initial foray into living soil where I used entirely too much nitrogen, leaving them with burned leaf tips. My seeds were from a lesser known dealer called Equilibrium and that may have had an impact on quality as well. If your other plants are thriving in the same environment, my guess would be a genetic hiccup. There are a few strains that I just won't grow anymore because of "princess" tendencies. Growing outdoors with all the extremes makes me favor the bulletproof strains like Wedding Cake, GG4, OG Kush, and FreakShow. I added another resilient strain this year with Vanilla Frosting.

crucialbunny - So funny that you mentioned Equilibrium! I literally just picked up a pack of their seeds in CA for the first time.
I was curious and they were on sale, lol.

Going2fast Please forgive me while I ramble on a bit about auto’s. I’m not trying to hijack your thread but I consider you a pretty accomplished auto-holic and value your opinion and impressed by your skill.

The more I have gotten into genetics lately the more I’m discovering about our dear Mary Jane and her many varieties. Like for instance I have found that auto flowering is actually a recessive trait. I never gave it much thought and if anything I guess I thought it was a dominant trait as auto’s do what they they do when they’re gonna do it and that seemed pretty ‘Take Control’ or dominant to me.

It’s my understanding that un-adulterated Cannabis ruderalis has very little THC. With help from cannabis cultivators and geneticist over time that has changed.

My current level of understanding is; as autos have increased in popularity many back-yard breeders have attempted to or have created their own unique auto strains. The problem has come from those well meaning folks who didn’t really understand the process. As auto flowering is a recessive trait and it takes at least 3 generations to breed out the dominant photo traits many have unwittingly also promoted other recessive traits or produced autos that are neither true autos or photo (sometimes they’ll autoflower as expected other times they don’t appear to be auto at all but still carry the recessive gene). The problem appears more with new strains of autos than long established ones as over time some breeders have done much like you have done and bred auto to auto purposefully enhancing stronger genetic traits.

What are your thoughts on this Maestro?

Interesting topic BU2B. I'm also attempting to understand all of this as well. From what I've read; the ruderalis trait was somewhat stubborn when people began to cross it into photoperiod cannabis "strains". I'm sure it was lack of understanding the genetic traits, coupled with inexperience. Hell, a decade ago they couldn't even get these things to half the potency of their photoperiod counterparts. But now the THC contents are hardly lacking. I'm interested to see what becomes of this autoflowering craze. Maybe it's just a fad, lol.
I believe this is why back-crossing is important to stabilize the genetic traits, correct?
Going2fast - Sorry to continue the hijacking.

I really don’t want to hijack the thread and I’m not sure where the host has the intention of this going. So I will answer your question with a resounding yes, absolutely and leave it at that until a fuller itinerary develops. I’d love to further discuss the topic but not really into hosting a thread at the moment. Happy to discuss it in private unless Going2fast gives the go ahead ✌️

Shallow end of the gene pool, Cookies has been overbreed and passed around so much it's a genetic mess, then you got Pollen chucking peeps that cross something Durban with something kush and Wham! ....New Cookies....

Had a discussion with a few breeders years back or so and the basis on the conversation was most of todays cookies was typically unstable, very finicky, and prone to Herm. Each time iv run something with a stated cookie line it's been a hassle, typically find balls mid flower or a few surprise seeds deep in the bottom of the jar(bucket), mostly the plants were "special needs" plants and at the very least P.I.T.A
remember lots of Strains have been sent overseas, breed with European genetics, then backbreed or recreated to a close substitution and shipped back to you or said Pollen chucker,
Not like you hear peeps talking Thin Mints line (west coast Clone only right!) Just GSC or Cookies but from where? Who's cut?

Actually got a Ethos End Game mother with Collins cookie line in it ATM and it the same story, didnt like being cut, tied down, moved, looked at, hard to cloned, hated variations to the water but man.....kicks my head in kinda smoke so much I'm keeping it alive to run again for the deciding if the challenge is worth the reward.

Best I got for yah is manganese from iron toxicity (you got well water?) She's is a sensitive girl to minor changes, maybe try lowering her Ph a little but you'll probably fight this one till the end.

Thanks Mr.furley I do have well water that has moderate iron and fluoride. Gonna remember this a d try resourcing water for my next forum stomper run cause I do love the cookie terps. crucialbunny princess tendencies. I love it.
BU2B it's not a hijack it's a discussion about finicky genetics. Mr furleys point is sound. I too am an amateur pollen chucker. My goal is to take the structure of one plant and combine it with the terp profile of another. But it's a crap shoot. I love growing out f1 gens because of the range of profiles then it's a matter of picking the nicest ones and going forward. But I'm not going to pay someone for them. I see a lot of breeders selling F1 and f2 beans for big money and some are well established names. As much as I like night owl he's been pushing a lot of f1 crosses lately for 10 bucks a bean. Mephisto has a few f1s for sale but most of their line is f4 or better. They give you f1 crosses as freebies but are open about it.
As with all seed grown plants there's always a chance at an outlier no matter how refined the strain. Be it a mutation, plant that flowers late or refuses to flower or even a male in rare cases. The chance is there. But I agree that the genetics eventually get strung out from so much cross breeding. On top of that too many unscrupulous people naming white label beans whatever they want for a sale.
Now I want to do a run with all cookie strains just to see if I can nail down the issue. Damn I love this hobby.

Unfortunately a lot of the tastiest herb comes for the most finicky lines. Pollen chucking as a hobby is the next step for the home grower, the holy grail for one's most successful feeling of accomplishment and inevitable for one looking for self enlightenment so Chuck on my friend.

F1 seeds are easy, not alot of the recessive genes push out till you hit the F2's and so on. it is common for "breeders" (and I use that term loosely) to open pollinate a room with 1 male( natural or reversed) and several females then Wham! A room full of various new F1 crosses (Og-any-weed×mo-money). Photosensitive plants are not as hard to stabilize but Autos are a whole other ball game, if you haven't and there is not alot of information freely give out on the subject, research "improving the line" for the ruderalis Gene, this is the step money making pollen chucking breeders don't G.A F about, ethics.

You do realize the can of worms that was just open in your thread🪱

I grow both autos and photos. I find the autos to very finicky and sometimes frustrating but I grow them when I know that I have a short growing window. I have been doing some overseas travel during the spring for the last couple of years so I use the autos to fill in gaps in my grow schedule. In summer it's all photos which I find to be more heat tolerant than autos.

I really pushed things this year to see how many grows I could get in a year. 4 photos grows and 2 autos so far. Autos were an experiment as it's been years since I grew any. But I want to avoid the flower tent for photos in the dead of winter due to cold temps.

Current photos have already had the main colas off and the popcorn is popping now for the last 10 days..
