    Burrrrrp!

Hiya gardening buddies (bud buddies?… bud buds?), ok, so not a topic about my inability to eat onions, it is a question about burping your jars. Probably stuck in my mind because of the topic in the newsletter about hay smell.

I was reading in a forum topic about someone burping their jars for what I thought was a really long time, but in looking back through GWE I don’t think it is ever specified what a reasonable amount of time is to leave the jar open each time you burp. I am pretty sure someone else posted they burp almost not at all and find it maintains the colour and natural terpene smell (their picture of older buds certainly looked better than some of my old jars from early grows where the buds are starting to go the colour of tobacco - although still potent and tasty). Personally I do it for just a few minutes each time (assuming they were dried properly and this is about curing not trying to lower RH in the jar) but that may be more about impatience than good practice. I have always just figured a quick burp was enough to vent any off-gassing from the buds… which I assume to mainly be broken down chlorophyll and other byproduct gasses you want to get rid of. I do the usual approach of burping less frequently over a couple months (while happily sampling my wares) and eventually decide they are good as is, at which point they go into the cupboard with all the other jars of buds from my other grows that I can’t use fast enough to keep up with 🙂 (not a bad problem to have).

My question - assuming the buds are properly dried and went into the jar at the correct RH all the way through how long do you leave your jars open each time you burp and how many days/weeks/months until you stop burping them?

Follow up question for bonus points -
I assume most do their cure in litre size mason jars containing about an ounce. Do you rotate/shake/turn upside down/roll the jar? I worry about messing up the trichomes but I also want to avoid a pocket of humid air at the bottom and buds that are all stuck together inviting mold. What do you do? I am thinking in the future about laying the jars on their side and giving them a gentle quarter turn with each burp but I am open to suggestions. I figure that might increase surface area which would speed up off-gassing. Do you keep turning yours when you stop burping?

Double bonus points if you have a scientific basis for your method but I’ll happily hear a theory based on unproven science or even significant experience with observable successful curing outcomes without completely knowing why.

    Thanks for your input!

There is no one answer. Normally after jar I leave them open around an hour 2 or 3 times a day. Like just about everything else involving cannabis cultivation there is a learning curve you get through experience. In curing, smell and feel are the most crucial aspects. A couple tricks I use is that if there is any chlorophyll smell remaining (fresh cut grass smell) then allow the jar to remain open. Lessen the amount of open jar time as the green smell becomes less prevalent. After a few weeks a 10-15 minute burp is all they'll need once a day. when mine are fully cured i don't touch them until I want to remove some. Pick up a bud and give it a gentle squeeze, if it springs back after a few moments it's doing well. If it stays squashed, it's still to wet. If it crumbles into powder, well, you're shit outa luck and over did the dry.

There's no reason to shake or move the buds around in the jar for "air pockets" unless you have packed them too tightly.

The true denominator of good weed and so-so is the cure. I've grown some great product in the past only to end up with mediocre because of a lousy cure.

Thanks crucialbunny . I was curious how others did it and a little afraid I would have to admit how lazy I am by burping mine so little. I have to admit I am a science nerd - it would be interesting to see at a ppm level or some other measurement exactly what is breaking down in he jar… how much is chlorophyll vs terpenes and cannabinoids or some other mystery molecules etc. Figure out what a good cure adds to the mix so we might reproduce it more consistently. I have to also admit I don’t always sense a big difference in taste from one bud to the next so maybe it is my sense of smell. Sometimes I get a little a little bit of coughing but I think that is more me than the bud. The only thing I can really sense is that awful sharp fresh cut grass smell. I think I still have it ingrained in my memory from the awful old dry weed in a sandwich baggy we used to get as teenagers. I don’t think I have had anything truly bad in that regard in a while. I really hated the smell of shiskaberry but not because it smelled like hay - that stuff smelled like weird fruit punch, like they sprayed something on it to that they thought would make it smell more like the name…and failed. 🙂

DeadlyFruit When you mentioned sprayed on flavor it reminded me of meeting a guy at a party one night who grew commercially who told me they would load product into a clothes dryer and spray various essences of what was popular at the moment and tumble it for a few minutes. So you probably weren't imagining it. To develop a sense of where the flavors are, try smoking it like a cigar without inhaling. i use a hookah when I try and get an idea of flavor profiles and let the smoke linger in my mouth. Not trying to sound snobbish or anything but i seldom get high so not inhaling is the only way I can judge my grow without getting a serious case of the spins.

That was it! I think it was one of those weird floral dryer sheets. It was dispo weed as well, and from a large producer. That’s criminal. I had trouble finishing the stuff.

I’ll give the cigar smoke approach a try - thanks for the tip.

First week I open the jars 30 min daily.
    second week only 15 min.
third week it’s only second or third day I will open jars.
Just because people are over 50 doesn’t mean they know everything.
You can teach a old dog new tricks - But it will still think the old ways are the “best” lol

Sorry to hear that CW, but I’m glad there is something that helps. The gardening part is peaceful as well so it kind of helps coming and going.
