Hiya gardening buddies (bud buddies?… bud buds?), ok, so not a topic about my inability to eat onions, it is a question about burping your jars. Probably stuck in my mind because of the topic in the newsletter about hay smell.
I was reading in a forum topic about someone burping their jars for what I thought was a really long time, but in looking back through GWE I don’t think it is ever specified what a reasonable amount of time is to leave the jar open each time you burp. I am pretty sure someone else posted they burp almost not at all and find it maintains the colour and natural terpene smell (their picture of older buds certainly looked better than some of my old jars from early grows where the buds are starting to go the colour of tobacco - although still potent and tasty). Personally I do it for just a few minutes each time (assuming they were dried properly and this is about curing not trying to lower RH in the jar) but that may be more about impatience than good practice. I have always just figured a quick burp was enough to vent any off-gassing from the buds… which I assume to mainly be broken down chlorophyll and other byproduct gasses you want to get rid of. I do the usual approach of burping less frequently over a couple months (while happily sampling my wares) and eventually decide they are good as is, at which point they go into the cupboard with all the other jars of buds from my other grows that I can’t use fast enough to keep up with 🙂 (not a bad problem to have).
My question - assuming the buds are properly dried and went into the jar at the correct RH all the way through how long do you leave your jars open each time you burp and how many days/weeks/months until you stop burping them?
Follow up question for bonus points -
I assume most do their cure in litre size mason jars containing about an ounce. Do you rotate/shake/turn upside down/roll the jar? I worry about messing up the trichomes but I also want to avoid a pocket of humid air at the bottom and buds that are all stuck together inviting mold. What do you do? I am thinking in the future about laying the jars on their side and giving them a gentle quarter turn with each burp but I am open to suggestions. I figure that might increase surface area which would speed up off-gassing. Do you keep turning yours when you stop burping?
Double bonus points if you have a scientific basis for your method but I’ll happily hear a theory based on unproven science or even significant experience with observable successful curing outcomes without completely knowing why.
Thanks for your input!
