    sprouting from seeds....

About a week ago I started germinating 5 different strains, two seeds each. Three of the strains sprouted within 36hrs, the other two didn't. I waited a week for the ones that didn't but tossed them today. It seems weird that 2 out of 3 seeds in two different packets from two different seed banks (very reputable ones at that) didn't germinate while all the rest did.
    Any ideas? old seeds?

I have never had this happen before. Am trying some different approaches and will let everyone know how it turns out. Thanks for getting back.

A few factors like age, storage, moisture can all play a part. Seems like age in this case.

Yeah, I hope its just age...cuz these were right out of the packages_ which were well made_moisture and tamper proof. I went back and looked through my notes and most of the time when I had seeds that didn't germinate they were from the same package. I'm usually always happy with what I get from the seed banks but if you buy 5 seeds for $50 and only 1 or 2 sprout that doesn't make ones day. Maybe they could start putting "batch" dates and "best used by" dates the packaging like dispensaries have to.

I totally agree i got my first seeds from an ex outdoor grower that warned me the seeds were at least 3 years old and out of 10 only 3 sprouted. I have seeds in the way from a bank for the first time ever, i hope i don't have the same issue

I hope you get good ones too. Over the past few years I've gotten all my seeds from seed banks and for the most part at least 4 out of 5 sprout. If I can swing the $
I always try to get seed packs with 5 seeds, That way I can germinate 3 and have two more left for anther grow.Sometimes it can be hard to get specific strains.

ZigZag, write to the store you bought em at, and tell them what happened. I just got a chunk of credit put on my account from SeedSupreme when I wrote and told them that my $18.00 Green Crack was a boy seed.

OUCH! that IS a bummer! to raise a great looking plant and then find its a male. I though that might have happened on my last grow but thankfully it didn't.
I'll take your suggestion for sure. Will send notice to the seed banks themselves. The folks I got the seeds from here in the US aren't at fault cuz they don't keep seeds more than 6 months. And they sent me a surprise 5 pack of Jack H. so I can't complain too much! Thanks for the suggestion and glad you got a decent response from the vendor.

ya know, I'm glad it happened, because now I have experienced it and I know what to look for and what to-sob-do. This is only my second grow, and I'm in week 4 of flower, and I look at them every day and see what's going on and changing, and I didn't do it in so much detail on the first grow. So I have learned a lot on this grow so far!!! My bud's beginnin to get phat!!!!

Agree agree agree!!Don't let them go by just like that, they might even bet on you not saying anything and they just got rid of some old seeds they had in a forgotten case in Returns!Just kidding but really, you should always contact them, most seedbanks and/or resellers are usually very happy to provide as flaming ones status in this market can destroy a seed.co quite fast...All it takes is a couple forums going wide about their loss and herms

For my chest's own pressure point i will not name the one that was bad at replying and had low freebies/communication skills!!The one i use is also in spain but has really good reviews and i will have a tell tale for one of their Choco Haze seeds im growing! For eu i would suggest (they ship to us i think but you know, you have it all over there) my "bud-dies" in zamnesia as i have had great contact with their support, nothing crazy about their prices besides being cheaper than ANY uk seller i have found (including the infamous Gorila,Canabisseeds.co.uk etc) and has a good seed bank catalogue! Again, that was my experience only with GHQ Zamnesia and the third Spanish cheapie! Other can claim otherwise and i will be happy to hear that since im not the center of the universe (at least i don't feel the magnitude lol) and im a 4 time seed buyer...

P.S These guys give out freebies of their own breeds in either auto or photo type, you will never get extra seeds from other breeders unless it has been announced from the breeder that he has a special coming up!

The vendor I get my seeds from is in Oregon. I can get seeds from any seed bank through them and avoid shipping them in from overseas. They also have a good selection of seeds they grow themselves and
are great folks to work with. I'm not sure if it's appropriate to name a specific vendor on this site but I'm willing to if Nebula gives the OK. If you want seeds fast and are on the west coast they are a great and a safe alternative and you can get a ton of varieties from different banks from one vendor shipped at the same time (for the same price as from the suppliers). They also have new varieties not even listed on Leafly. The list of vendors they represent is extensive. Thing is if you see something on their site and want it you better get it then cuz it might not last long.
They don't order more than they think they can sell fairly quickly so nothing sits around very long.
The seeds that they produce themselves are really fresh.
For those of you in the UK....can you just take the train over to Amsterdam for a weekend and get what you want ...or is it difficult to get back home with them?
Or are the seed banks over there under similar restrictions where you can't buy directly in person at a bank and must order online or hope that a dispensary has something you want?
My experience with dispensaries is that the selection of seeds they have is very limited_ if they have them.
Just wondering as we'r'e going to be in the UK this coming Spring...Also if anyone knows if you can use a state issued med card in the UK?
I don't want to risk bringing anything through LHR...
    Thanks to all...:~)

I would also love to know who the Oregon vendor is. I bought my fist set of seeds from a local dispensary, and ordered some from True North Seeds, my order is still in transit.

Hello everyone, sorry for the delay, I work out in a world where there is no internet_ except when I get back home. OK, so here's the info on the outfit I get my seeds from_
They are: Southern Oregon Seeds_ website is: sooregonseeds.com check out their menu_ they have seeds from just abut every seed bank out there_all the big ones and a bunch of others.
They also produce some of their own seeds as well which are fresh and I've always had good luck with 80-100% germination. Occasionally I get a pack of seeds that has a germination rate of about 50% but these are always from the banks they resell from. Their prices are the same, they have some good specials and freebees, and are great folks to work with. Shipping is by post, has tracking and takes about 3 days_ to Alaska_ so if you're in the "lower 48" then it should be even faster. Sometimes they run out of some strains pretty fast so if I see something I really want to try then I order it. No credit cards yet but once you become a regular customer things tend to go really fast and once you make your order they hold it until it ships_ so you're guaranteed to get what you paid for. Try em!

        Those of us who live in the US can't order from within the US... :-{

      #10
Huh? Did you mean the UK...not the US? Or somewhere else outside the US? I've had no problem using the USPO for delivery within the US. I've heard that UPS and Fedex offer employees "bonuses" if they discover weed in any packages... but no confirmation of that....I know people who have used one of those carriers and had no problems, but SOS only delivers by postal for that reason....and its more affordable.

How on earth is that possible? That would imply that they are feeding of the import-export trades! You have so many seedbanks that are based in US soil! They then have to send it to Europe,Uk,Asia and you have to import it to get it to you (for let's say stock)!!So there is no Us to Us trade happening?

From GWE's page on seed buying:

"Many, many growers order seeds online every day, and to this day there has never been a report of someone in the USA getting in legal trouble for simply ordering cannabis seeds online. You can check me on that! In fact, American citizens have been ordering seeds overseas via mail order from Amsterdam since at least the 1970s, and even though it's been over 40 years there hasn't been a case of an American getting in legal trouble simply for ordering cannabis seeds online through the mail!
An American citizen won't get in legal trouble for ordering cannabis seeds online from outside the country. However, because of the (backwards) way U.S. federal laws work surrounding cannabis, you can get in a lot of legal trouble for selling or sending seeds from one place to another within the USA, even between legal states! That's why you never see long-term cannabis seed banks located in the U.S.

When marijuana seeds get caught by customs agents during shipping, the seeds get tossed and that's it. It doesn't matter what state you're in, or your local laws. That is simply the way our laws about customs work. On the flip side, you can get in a lot of trouble by sending seeds from one place to the other within the US (though this is still very, very rare)."

Oh yeah, you guys have 2 courts to order and federal above state laws! Could never get my head around that structure..

      #11
Yeah, having different state and federal laws to contend with is a PITA and can present all kinds of confusion and issues. Luckily prosecution is rare.
I've heard that seeds that get caught by customs just get thrown away, and are not prosecuted. But then I usually order 20 seeds or more and it'd be a bummer if I lost the whole package to customs. Not likely to happen, but I just feel more comfortable getting them from inside our borders. Never had a bad experience doing that. And either way I'm helping to support the industry, here and overseas. I was wondering why its been so hard to get seeds from seed banks within the US_ allatup_ thanks for helping with that. And now I do feel a bit better about ordering from oversea's_ sometimes strains that are out of stock here are available from the seed banks in Amsterdam. On another note does anyone know if you can visit the seed banks in Amsterdam and what the legal/enforcement procedures are for carrying seeds back to the US?

      #12
Yeah no kidding. My first intention is to try to visit some of the seed banks in Amsterdam when I'm there this Spring so I can see for myself the strains I'd like to get. So many choices and doing mail order all you have are pics and reviews. In person is best for me. Then to be safe I can mail order once I get home.... or maybe just buy there on the spot and have em shipped so they are waiting for me when I get back!

      #13
Hmmmm...is there a "guide to "coffee shops" that are rated by their public? Have you ever tried to visit a seed bank? In the US I haven't found a seed bank you can actually visit....not open to the public unless you know someone connected to them in some way. Only can order online. Kinda like the coffee shops in Amsterdam the dispensaries here don't carry much of a variety of seed, mostly flower and finished products like oil and shatter and such.

I just sent an email to Barney's Farm_ got some seeds from them that had a 100% germination rate but are proving a little frustrating to grow. Some weird issue I haven't been able to figure out but they seem to be growing out of it, thankfully. Anyway I asked them for any advise considering that strain_ said they weren't allowed to offer that but did send me some pics of their store and told me to visit anytime. So yeah, Im going to look around on the net and see what else I can find. I know they have lots of brewery tours so maybe they have a "coffee shop" or seed bank tour as well? We'll see. Heading over there has been on my wife's "bucket" list for years so we're gonna check that one off this Spring. I'll post some pics when I get back.

I got mad respect for BF; what are the seeds you got growing?

      #15
I have 3 Ayahuasca Purple growing now. They started out pretty slow but are now picking up. looking like they are going to be pretty short_less than 60cms, but bushy. They are four weeks old now and are about 30 cms tall. The leaves are huge for such a short plant_ its wider than it is tall. short internodes. Seems to be a few shades darker in color than the Gold Mine or the S.A.D.
All three seeds sprouted within 24hrs. I have them in 3 gallon smart pots, in coco/perlite with grow stones in the bottom. I'm cutting back on the nitrogen because its looking like they might be in the first stage of nitrogen toxicity. Flushed them yesterday and fed with flowering nutrients only. Going to put on 12/12 on Feb. 17.
Grew Barney's Tangerine Dream last time and it is now one of my favorite. Nice uplifting high with easy transition to mellow. Tasty herb, sweet but with a citrus tang to it
      Cheers!.
