Lots of info here, many styles of growing.
Ok guys if anyone is about to start some autos let's all get in this one thread grow our asses off and help each other. Right now I know it will be me Retodd,
I bought landscaping cloth and made my own smart pots, the tops and bottoms of 55 gallon drums for drip pans, 28 watt cfls for lighting (yes they are crap but will work), mix my own soil from the pasture (compost). One can spend a ton of money, but these plants have grown for thousands of years without our help. I gather and use lots or organics, no cost other than gathering (labor)!

I use old bbq grates for my risers - also the one on the side burner is great!
But if I need a real rise - cinder block - yup. COB light is set for the big girls at 24 inches - seedlings need to be at 36 inches - cinder block is perfect. Also use bricks. Don't want any toppling over cuz my base isn't strong enough.
Fabric pots is a good start.3 X 3 gorilla. Promix soil . Green Planet Nutes
