My plants are a couple weeks away from harvest so I was thinking about budding my mother plant that is taking up 2/3rds of my grow space )2x4x5 for veg and another 2x4x6 for budding) I did some training yesterday to make it a bit shorter before budding. So I was wondering if 1 big wide plant produces as much as 2 or 3 smaller plants in the same space.

Not necessarily. Yields are very dependent upon genetics.
4x4 600w HID empty for summer
3x3 400w HID with Bruce Banner and Skywalker Kush
2x2 65w Quantum Board LED with 4 mother strains
running all simultaneously for a perpetual harvests.

I got the plant from a guy that's been growing almost twice as long as I've been alive. He grew it from seed to harvest then re-vegged it to be his mother plant. Since he grows some of the best weed I'm smoked, I'm guessing the genetics aren't an issue.

So if you assume all the same genetic make up, than yes the one larger one from seed should theoretically yeild more than the several clones that make up the same space. This is negating many many veriables, but in theory.

      Hmm ok thank you.

Yes, it’s really about surface area. One plant grown out to fill a tent will produce as much as 2 or 3 plants grown out to fill the same space (Assuming we’re talking about clones). As Toker said tho, there are a lot of variables involved too.

As for the mother plant issue, take another clone to use as a mother, but this time keep her in a little 3 or 4” pot. This keeps her small and allows you to take a handful of cuttings at a time. It’s known as a “bonsai mother”. The only real maintenance they will need is trimming of the root ball 2 times a year and repotted in the same pot.

I already have some young clones from her. I was thinking about taking clones from them before they go into budding. 2 vegging and 2 budding, cropping every 2 months was my plan since we can grow 4 plants now. But with a small mother I could change the cycle and crop one a month. Which might be better.. if I have twice as much I tend to smoke twice as much.
