What Does Trump Mean For Weed?

The Republicans control all three branches, Republicans have been historically anti-cannabis. Should we expect Trump to roll back the progress we've made?

I don't think its an issue he has taken a real stance on. From what I remember early on in his campaign he is pro medical, but never made it a real part of campaign. I believe he will skirt the issue and continue to let each state do their own thing.

I'm hoping that on a federal level we will remove it from CI and get the DEA off of doctors ass's. I don't see any real changes in the heart of Dixie where I live-the politicians still see it as the 'Evil Weed'.

The Republican party of today is not the same as our fathers. President-elect Trump IMO is more of a States rights anti-big federal government individual. I doubt that he is going to even try to dictate to the states that they must rescind their medical marijuana and personal use laws we have worked so hard to get enacted. Remember that while some states have enacted new laws the Federal government still lists marijuana as an illegal substance. Plus I think that he has many more and bigger fish to fry, illegal immigration and restoring our society to a non-divisive one just to name two.

Again this is just my opinion.
It's not how crazy I am, but how much I enjoy it that makes me dangerous.

Couldn't agree more biker. It's the will of the people and when you start messing with the will of the people.... well I won't go into all the possible outcomes but even Trump knows this.

Trump has has said in the past, he will leave it up to the states regarding cannabis. The new attorney general is going to be a problem, but hopefully he's not given any authority in the matter.

Reform may slow a bit, but nothing is going to stop what's been set in motion. Too many of the old guard are dead or dying. They are the ones bitterly holding onto prohibition as a whole.

I hate generalizations but I believe it to be true. With exceptions of course.

You know over a million more people voted for Hillary? So how is Trump becoming president the will of the people when it was really the will of the minority of the people?

I might have read you wrong there, my bad. Cannabis is the will of the people. And the majority of Americans have said it should be legal. And now they say it can't become un-illegal because of that stupid treaty. Forget that, no one tells America what to do.

I won't go over the electoral college and why it's flawed, but I agree.

I'm not sure that a majority of Americans as a whole agree that it should be legal. But certain states sure do.

I'm not sure what treaty you're referencing.

Bottom line, prohibition is falling and nothing is going to stop it. Not Trump, not the new AG. Once a little old lady got busted for 1 pot plant in her backyard for her artrhritis that costed taxpayers $60k for the special teams to raid, people realize the war on drugs is a failure and prohibition is a failure.

The new Attorney General of the United States doesn't even believe in medical marijuana. Marijuana is against Federal Law in the United States. We will need to adjust the sails as our ship moves forward.

I have my fingers crossed for Obama to legalize it nationally right before he moves out of office. I've heard rumors, but they are only rumors. Fingers crossed tight.

Obama is the man. I just hope people don't lose hope and end up giving up the fight. We can not rest until it becomes federally legal. We can not feel comfortable, because at any second, until its legal, all the progress could be rolled back, and we'd be back in 1995 starting all over again.

This is my hope also. All outgoing presidents, especially when there is a party change, enact a bunch of executive orders. I'm sure some them will be environmental issues, and a few pardons. Lifting the federal ban on medical marijuana should be in the mix.

Any executive order can be simply overturned by another executive order. We need a Revision of federal law for true legalization, Even in states were weed is legal if you even apply for a permit to grow or dispense weed you cannot use any kind of bank, for anything, because of federal money laundering laws. FDIC regulations. They did modify IRS regulations and have instruction on how to pay taxes on however. Canna businessmen can't even have a checking account, Making this all cash business very dangerous,.
You can not get a concealed weapon permit, or buy a gun.
The soon to be Attorney General was part of Nancy Regan's just say no program, sees no medical value in weed, and convinced the weed is a gateway drug. I hope he stays busy with Immigration, home grown terrorists, and Urban crime.
With over 70% of the voting public in favor of at the very least Medical Cannabis, even the policiitains are stupid enough crack down like the bad old days. To many people are wise to the lies, and have see the benefits.

So, here's my take on this... you guys are barking up the wrong tree....

It's the DEA that determines what is and isn't considered a scheduled drug. It's the DEA that just recently declined to move cannabis off of schedule 1 despite Obama's recommendation. It's the DEA, in conjunction with the FDA, that determines testing, medical evaluations of scheduled drugs, etc.

It's the DEA that will determine when cannabis becomes federally legal, not the president, not the AG.

Obama will not legalize cannabis before he leaves. It violates international policies and the controlled substances act. Even if he did, it would never go into action. There is a long drawn out process and the first would be to reschedule the drug. Without rescheduling, nothing is going to happen.

So the road to federal legalization goes through the DEA... not the president.

                  my $.02...

Your right about the DEA and FDA. They aren't elected, their appointed. The AG directs how laws are enforced, or not enforced, the President decides who runs the DEA and The FDA.

Until something happens on the Federal level, banks will not do business with ANY marijauna businesses for fear of Federal crackdown. This seems so asinine on so many levels, if the Fed truly is concerned about criminal activity in the marijauna industry.

Doesn't the DEA answer to the FBI, who's Director is appointed by the President? Obama hired Comey. So Trump could hire one of his old pals for Director of the FBI and then tell that guy to have the DEA start raiding all the dispensaries in every state.

True. I hope there would be protests so large they would have to rethink that.

Actually, it's not just the FDA. Any research has to be approve by 4 other departments including the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), the DEA, National Institutes of Health (NIH), Department of Health and Human Services. They don't have inter-locking systems, so any research application gets lost in red tape.
