Do these HPS lamps give off noise? It seems to me that I remember high-wattage HPS lamps in another application being complained of as buzzy. I'm still thinking that a single 600W bulb would have the problem already mentioned above as the being the sole source of light coming from only one direction.

The various 600W HPS bulbs on eBay also look very different from each other.

I'm trying to think this through...smaller multiple bulbs placed in the corners? Hmmm...

Seems that some ballasts may produce some noise. Just remember if you decide to go the MH/HPS route-they produce significant IR that adds substantially to the heat load. If you can regulate climatics, then that would give you the lowest cost start-up.

Hey there 600m, I noticed daas mentioned autocobs and you were inquiring about them, as well as the cheaper LEDs.

My first light was a galaxyhydro 600 (230-240 w actual draw from the wall.) It got me about a month into growing with no problems. The only reason I took it out of the tent was because I started researching other lights, and I stumbled across the autocob.

The autocob is only 55 w, but it's actually comparable to a 150 w hps. I have 3 going in my 3*3*6 tent. One more will complete my set, but I could easily keep growing just fine with 3.

Some good things about the autocob (at least to me, everyones grow environment is different so it may not be for everyone) are they are completely silent. No noise whatsoever. They also don't put off a ton of heat. It's probably 74 in basement, and only 77-78 in the tent. I saw that your house gets down to 40, so maybe they won't be for you.

Because they are really small, they are really easy to work around. You can adjust them with no problems at all if you need to get in closer to the plants.

You can take a look at my link in my signature, I have some info on cobs as well as pics from my first grow using the cobs. cobshop.net has them for 135 a light. Seems expensive at first, but I would just buy one a paycheck until I got what I needed. The electricity bill has jumped up a whopping $20/mo with the autocobs rocking, so they literally pay themselves off in no time.

They also don't need a ballast, just plug them into the wall and go.

The reason these work so well even though their wattage is so low is because they use their light more efficiently than the hps or other LEDs. It's like comparing gas mileage of a Prius and a truck. The same amount of gas will take the Prius much farther than the truck.

Any questions let me know! I love telling the world about these guys. So far I have taken down 2 of my 4 plants, and I have gotten about 2 oz off each plant. Not bad for a first time grower growing autos!

Im a bit late to this post and I dnt know if people talked about this but leds will not add much heat at all but even the cheap leds can grow awesome plants iv used the chineese leds 350w true but in my personal exspereince BESTVA 1000w (200w true) grows plants twice as fast as the chineese no name. I love that bestva light I personaly find it stronger than my eye hortilux blue 400w HID. I would definitly recomend for cheap lights either BESTVA or vipraspecra. In my exspereince for a 3x3 area u will need 2 lights for sure to flower properly. Leds are like lazer beams and 90percent of the light only gos straight down. Dnt waste ur money on the no name chineese lights they dnt work very well, dnt get me wrong they work just not as gd at bestva or vipraspectra 300. When buying an led check the diode colors and fine one with uv light if u can uv has been proven to increase potency.

Morning 600m, mcubed476 is right about the cobs, very, very efficient, no heat, not hardly noticed on electric bill.Check them out for yourself , one will grow the Hell, out of a plant. 2 or 3 even better. Good Luck on whatever light you choose. They also help grow dense bud, without the fluff.

How long have you been using them daas? I'm very happy with them and would recommend them to anyone. The guy I got mine from, the one who started making autocobs, is really cool. He was very responsive in getting back to me

Mornin 476 Both of my sons are using Big Smo, cobs and they both just harvested their plants and you talk about the prettiest, the best smelling rock hard bud I've seen in a long time. My tent is to damn small right now so I'm using 145watt led to veg. with then I'm gonna use my new 315lec. Only thing about the cobs I don't like is that they have to be hung so damn high. After this grow I'm gonna get a larger tent, mine is only 4 foot high. My boys both got big tents and swear by them cobs . Everything u said about them cobs is exactly what I heard and seen from my boys.

That's awesome! Bigsmo is who I went through too!

I'm gonna knock my next grow out of the park with these cobs. I have 3 right now, I want to get one more so I can have one over every plant. This being my first grow, I messed up quite a few times along the way.

And you're right about the light height. I had them about 12 inches away, and one of mine started foxtailing. I took care of that though. Harvest this Thursday, I'm stoked.

The Chinese "plurple" panels like Marshydro or basically all others (most of them are really the same) are "not bad" as beginner lights if you're REALLY on a budget.
I started out with two of these, with one of them the LEDs started failing several months in and I had hassles getting replacement LEDs from fricking China and had to solder them myself which isn't something anyone can easily do.

I have since then switched to DIY fixtures based on CREE CXB3590 (two bars with 3 COB lights each), which is NO COMPARISON. The Cree COB lights are still as reliable as on day 1...and it's already 2 years or so I am using them....semi-outside in a greenhouse in the scorching Spanish heat, dust, etc.... I think there is nothing better than CREE CXB3590 based lights currently, also in terms of efficiency and light output.

That being said, as said if you're on a budget...and/or need a light where you don't have high requirements..the Chinese lights may do "ok" for vegging or seedlings etc.

Sorry 476 , I can't figure out where to comment on your reply , to f-cking high right now. But it ain't just my sons lights ,it's also lots of their friends also use big smos, cobs. Their plants look super strong looking, almost like young trees.Yep anything closer than about 20 inches is too close they told me. I hope you do well with your plants 476.
