I think Nebula's "Proven Grower" idea is great but it seems to create an admin load for somebody.
I might well be over complicating things ... and/or very stoned ... but how about a point system where you can use the points to nominate/gift special titles to other growers but not to yourself?
Points could be based on # of posts, with big point bonuses for completed grow journals, posts with a certain amount of likes, #s of subscribers, being featured in the newsletter etc. [basically any good/positive forum stat that can be automated], etc.
They have something pretty similar on AFN but without the twist of only being able to use points on other users titles/badges.
More engaged users with more points and more experience would weight the system a bit but not totally. It would spread the admin load once the code was in place, and if people participated it would offer a sort of community reputation system ...Sand, sea, sun, sausages, and sinsemilla.
About all you can do in life is be who you are. Some people will love you for you. Most will love you for what you can do for them, and some won't like you at all.

Hmmm, lots of great ideas here! The idea of automating seems cool and I'll have to look into what that would entail. My fear is that someone with a lot of time to post could game the system to get tons of posts and likes by posting often, and their reputation might not necessarily be representative of their actual grow skill or helpfulness. Anyone can post a lot, but some of the best growers don't do a lot of posts so I'm afraid of linking reputation directly to likes or number of posts.
At the same time, we do want to reward the users who are active and always helping others in an accurate way, even if they haven't documented a grow yet! I'm not sure the best way to go about that (giving titles to the most "helpful" people without actually being able to see their grow skill to determine if they should get flair) but keep all the ideas coming!
My fear with giving flair to growers who haven't harvested yet is I've seen over the years it can be very easy for inexperienced new growers to accidentally lead other growers astray. They often don't see the nuances of different situations, especially if it's not their grow style (for example an inexperienced grower who's been researching soil often gives poor advice when trying to help someone out in hydro, because they may not even realize the other person isn't growing in soil, or that soil and hydro plants need to be treated differently). By the time a grower has reached and documented their first harvest, they've usually gained a ton of knowledge that they just wouldn't be able to get simply by reading and researching. A successful grow doesn't necessarily mean someone is an expert, but it does prove they have some level of skill.
What do you all think?

You are perfectly right about inexperienced growers (as myself) leading others astray, I want to help though, I try to, without pushing too much (I'm aware of the problem of leading astray hence I be careful to specify I'm a new grower without experience, only theoretical -limited- knowledge).
But, personally, I don't give a single damn about being "rewarded" by participating/being active. First a title is not a reward in itself, it doesn't mean much to me. The reward comes from the thank you from the person I helped, just by saying my opinion. But mainly it comes from the satisfaction of participating, of trying to help others. I don't help because I want a reward, I help because I want to help.
Keeping that in mind, I think titles should be given to those with experience. Like you trust some growers, you know they have skills? Give them some right over others titles, so that when THEY know one is skilled enough, they upgrade his title. If people want to upgrade title, they should create a topic or a private message to those "sub-admins"
I can see already a lot of wrong things about this method though, one sub admin think i'm ready to upgrade my title, another one sees my title change and disagree, changes it back... It's going to be complicated. To palliate a bit this problem, make sure there are very few sub admins (different levels can help, sub admins being just under you), all in contact with each another. (a dedicated portion of the forum only accessible to them, maybe? To talk about this fellow, or that title)
Why sub-admins? Because you can't do the work all by yourself, and this is a community. It should self regulate, decide for itself somewhat, have a life of its own independent of you -don't take this the wrong way, you would still have the last word!! I'm saying this in the only optic that you can't do everything alone-.
So titles like "Master of hydro", "Connaisseur of hydro", "Hydro grower", "Hydro newbie", etc. And in BIG CAPITAL BOLD UNDERLINED letters, cause when I joined, titles did not jump at me, more the orange bar that fills under the names of people.Last edited by Minoo96; 06-24-2017, 08:28 PM.

Feel free to PM me, and I'll try to check in as soon as I can! I'll be spending more time in the forum, too

Nebula I think the growers here are mostly here to help ,I could care less if I have 1 or a 1000 posts I just give my input my thought are there 6 ways to do everything so if something works for you then use it even if it is non conventional I take what other say with a grain of salt and hope they take what I say with one to . I think 9fingers is right in that some newbees are very well read and able to articulate better than me so I like to see what they have to say, I dont think I have seen Stop you are doing it wrong at al,l mostly that might work but here is how I do it Type statements

What about a feedback system. If You post a reply to a thread after Say a week or two the original person can give feedback on said person.
1)helpful.
2)trying to help.
3)not helpful.
if this response of feedback was displayed people would write their own experience level within the community.
I do like the documented grows thread idea I trust people on here with multiple grows, documented. it makes the most sense, visual proof.Space for Rent.

Yes is all about how helpful it is. I've seen someone new just sharing a little seedling wondering if it's healthy and some answers get really deep and specific so much that ends up being confusing for someone on a very basic level. That would be trying to help but not really helpful when all the grower needs to hear right now is don't water very often and get a ph meter

It is in my heart that the majority of post reply are in the best intentions to help, not to hinder on purpose. For all levels of forum guest and user it must remain neutral and approachable, if it turns into a competition it can scary off someone that just needs help, when answer start coming in one can state they peace with out the need to" back up" they claims (feedback and grow link back that).
I do like the green thumb bar, buuuutttttttt I doesn't change! 99% of the Peps here are green thumb, some have 1000's of post, some have 100's.if your a intimidated newbie with a problem Can't tell who's who's, can't tell if someone likes to talk or likes to grow. Weather you like to talk, grow or both all should have a place and feel safe.
Ramble rambler rambler see I'm a talker.

This is my first time on a forum so I'm new at this ,but if I was a new grower that really and truly wanted to learn how to grow and be good at it ,I personally wouldn't take anyone's advice until after I had read GWE from front to back several times .And then before using the advice I got on the forum i would go back an double check what Nebula has written on GWE just to be safe. I might be and probably am different from y'all but I don't care what I'm doing playing golf, fishing or growing pot I want to do it the best I can. The forum is a good thing to you can learn from it , but you better double check with GWE first to be sure. Sorry rambling again , got a good buzz going.Cfls for a week or two

Agreed. I read and re read through the GWE site. Reading a post and taking it as gospel just isn't how I do things. The time invested in a grow is just too long to jump after reading a post or two. That's how I pretty much ruined my first soil grow. I was bouncing around different forums and as everybody knows there is way wrong information out there. GWE presents good methods, well documented and practical.

In the meantime, if anyone would like to nominate someone, I encourage you to PM me! If I get a bunch of nominations for someone, I'll give them a title while we figure out a better system

right let me put it this way, just having a grow good or bad is enough to get you a badge? who will decide that? either we all decide who gets the badges in a collective way (super hard) or we have to chose someone with the power to give and take badges, based on what are we going to decide who can give badges?? does the "moderator" should be someone very experienced in growing? or should be the ones with most time to be around? either way is the same thing simply to tell nebula who we think should get the bagdes.... its a slippery slope to like others said "popularity contest", who decides who knows enough to vote for someone to be moderator or to have badges..... stop me if im funneling my point of view, i just get excited about social organization and points of view and stuff

I just posted those as an example some techie would have to make the actual badges. There could be a locked stickied thread with a legend explaining the badges. The framework is already there

Wow, pretty easy to see the folks who have it dialed in. New and lurking because I'm rather teck unsavy and memory isn't as good as long ago. Enjoy the happy atmosphere, but hate to see labels. Sad to see some newer folks posts get looked at but no answers. So much to know, and seeing the repition of easy questions is tough, but have we all been there. Rooting for the GWE automechanics is the most fun I have these days, so much optimism and friendlyness. I think ill stay "out here" lurking, for that alone. Take all my little red bars away please, I'm no expert.

NebulaHaze We all know who the master growers are on this forum; the proof is in the pudding. Why would anyone need more flair? When my buddies check in on my grows and say nice things, that's all I need to feel the sense of community that makes us strong.
Some members are naturally more inclined to help, and others are much more consumed with their own grows and don't bother with the newbies. Human nature is diverse.
I'm sure that you are very busy and you won't always be here to answer a newbie's question. It happens. We can't FORCE people to read GWE and learn the basics. Also human diversity, and with folks who won't or can't read, patience is a virtue. It really reminds me of my students: I simply can't prevent some of them from failing because they refuse to study...
As it stands right now, I still think you have one of the very best forums on the web because you don't allow sniping and snarking. Kind people grow kind bud.Anyone can grow schwag. If you want to grow top shelf bud, study hard: https://www.growweedeasy.com

wow just spent the last hour reading this post, heres my take I'm not computer literate ,I had to ask OZ to help with my signature ,I didn't know you could like a persons comment , I see alot of good knowledgeable posts that I like to read ,probably will forget it soon though lol, I'm here to help and get help .I'm usually on between 4 and 7 am and once in awile can drop in during the day so I'm usually a day late. when I log in I go to update my posts and then the main forum to see if their is someone who needs help , you can call me whatever you wan't just not late for a doobie. I, for one, am managing to do better with my grows since coming to this site. I just finished my first fully healthy grow through the entire flowering period, which has been an issue for me.
I get 95% of the information I need from the Site, not the forum. The forum is a great place to ask questions, but the information we all need is in the tutorials.
I don't read the journals because you need to read 10 atta boy posts, between the posts that contain substance.
I don't need any title, I just need knowledge. So far, so good.completed 7 grows
what I have learned so far:
environment maters more than nutrients
at least a dab of nutrients in every watering
effective flushing before harvest is critical to quality
