YOW! 101° Tomorrow, Full Week Up to 110°!

94° today, which my plants delight in, but 100°+ is getting dangerous.

What I've done is paint the 20" plastic tub I'm using for one plant a flat white. That hugely lowers the absorbed heat from the sun-- which will cook the roots and kill the plant if not controlled somehow (it also blocks the UV somewhat, which extends the life of the plastic container). Those black plastic nursery pots get so hot they'll burn your hand if you touch them, and all that heat transfers out into the water in the pot. White pots aren't much over ambient temperature. The three other plants are in smaller pots are still of green plastic until I transplant them, so I think I'm going to surround these darker pots with cardboard or something to keep them shaded.

What I'm doing is making sure the plants are watered and will mist and spray the plants themselves during the heat of the day. Every other plant likes this, so I assume marijuana does too.

Fortunately, the nights are around 55°-62°, so this will help some.

Any other thoughts on how I might help my plants survive this heatwave?

I'm planning to pick-up silica this afternoon to help cope with the heat wave. It also provides other benefits as well.

Last summer I so no ill effects from similar heat wave but growth slowed a little bit from 1 inch per day. 104 today and up to 110 next 7 days. I am growing a strain from Delhi India because it is famously hot there. I am sure it will be fine. It is the afghan and OG that should be interesting to see how they do. So far they are fine. I never have had to mist. Right now relative humidity is about 3%. last year I grew sativas from close to the equator and they liked the heat.

Did the former growth rate resume after the heatwave passed? Mine are at the 16"-18" stage and look vigorous, not as vulnerable as they would be as little seedlings -- though they survived a freak 100° windy day when they were in little Styrofoam solo cups some time ago.

I've wrapped the dark pots in an old white bedsheet, which should keep down the solar heating of the roots.

These are Aurora Indica Feminized, which are supposed to be indoor/outdoor and "easy to grow." We'll see!

If I had an environment like that, I'd be inside it myself!

I assume this is to retain water so they don't dry out.

My plants consume almost no water, as far as I can tell, at least compared to the stories I hear of them taking up a gallon a day or more. They didn't take up much even when they were in smaller terra cotta pots, which wick out and evaporate water like crazy. I'm sort of worried about that...but they're always damp an inch down or less in the soil.

Silica helps the plant deal with stress. Whether it be hot, cold, drought or wind even some pests. It helps build a stronger plant from what I have heard from friends leading me to trying it out.
Best of luck with the heat wave.

Silica, helps with temp. And makes the leaves less eatable ( tougher) for bugs to eat. Lol

              It's getting bad.

I was going out hourly and spraying the plants and also my meager garden, but still I got some burned leaves (the abundant new growth looks fine, though). I'm going to bring them in the house at noon or 1PM until this is over. Better a few hours less light for four more days than incineration. I think I may have messed up the one plant in had in the 20" plastic tub by moving it with a hand truck. It pressed the bottom up and and shifted the soil inside, making it crack on the surface -- maybe indicating I sheared off roots inside, I dunno. The sheet wadded up around the smaller pots works absolutely great, though. Getting it soaked when I spray down the leaves also gives a humidity boost as it dries out...though probably not very significantly.

This is the worst heatwave I think I've ever seen here. The nights don't even cool down that much. It was 90° last night...IN THE HOUSE!

El Centro? Tucson? Hellish places...my family were among the few hardy souls who settled the Imperial Valley over a hundred years ago. I can't imagine why. Only a couple of degrees Fahrenheit cooler than Death Valley.

🌱 When it's really hot I've found the most important thing is to keep the roots cool. I put my pots inside another empty container so that there's an air pocket between the sun and the outside of the container. Like I have smaller pots with the plant inside, and then I put the pot in a bigger empty pot. The next most important thing is to get them a little shade, so for example moving them to a shady area, or somehow putting a cover over them 🌱
