Wooden pipes. What wood do you prefer?

From my understanding from a bit of reading briar seems to be the best wood for wooden pipes. For those wooden pipe smokers out there, what wood type do you use/prefer?
Looking at getting a mate of mine a nice churchwood style one for his birthday, like the hobbits use on lord of the rings. I know he likes pipes and he'd really dig the style but want to make sure I get a really nice wood as he's a really good friend.

Ozbud I don't have any wood advice but I will say that whatever you do don't buy a bone pipe bone gives off a toxin when smoked out of . I trade at powwows and I see alot of bone bowls for sale not good they look cool enough but real bad for you good luck in your search

I prefer a onix pipe, as for wood iron wood from mex.works well as does a nice burl pipe just my .02 cents

hey oz had a thought today why not make the stem out of a real stem, just an idea
