Will the *Original* smell of my dry room affect my cannabis?

the color looks fine. A lot of growers use a digital readout pH meter that costs ~$15 at amazon. The papers are hard for me to use because if the solution is cloudy or dark like compost tea it's impossible to read with paper.
 
I have a cart ready on Amazon of all the things I want for my next grow/ for the curing. Ill check out on of the pens too. Is a good pH between like 6 and 7? or would it vary by soil/ strain/ all that good stuff?
 
Definitely agree with PeterMatanzas on getting a digital pH meter (that may be influenced slightly by a small colour vision problem I have but digital is just so much easier), although I will add that you should also do some reading on calibrating it (learned that one the hard way).
 
6.3 is the sweet spot, my reading never goes above 6.5 - EDIT: mine fluctuates between 6.0 - 6.3 with an occasional 6.5.

If there is only one item in your cart at amazon make it the pH meter. Often you'll see posts in the forum on "what nutrient should I add to mitigate this problem?" Well, you very often don't have to add nutrients, they are in the soil. If you add nutrients when this happens it won't help, you'll burn the plants. Most of the problems people have and think it's nutrients - it is nutrients yes, but they are locked out by the wrong pH. The plant can't access the nutrients efficiently because the pH has them locked out.
 
DeadlyFruit- yeah, I was just reading that the digital one I was interested in only came with one packet of neutral testing powder. I was trying to find out if I could use the test solution in the above pic that I already bought as the neutral testing solution, but I dont think I can. Has anyone tried a soil tester? Theres a combo pack with one, and it says it can tell me how much light is reaching the soil. But I dont want to waste money on something that could be useless
 
PeterMatanzas- the other items are like readers for the canning jars and other grow items. I used nutes for the entire length of my current grow and never read the pH. im trying to take more care in this next grow. The only real care I took for the water other than adding nutes, was running the tap water thru a Brita filter before mixing the nutes/ giving any to the plant
 
you did an outstanding job without a pH meter. I have a spare on hand. There's always got to be a pH meter here. I test the pH of water for vegetables and conventional flowers, too.
 
I purchased a bunch of extra packages of the powder, but I wanted to be sure so I also picked up some premixed reference solution as a final check. It is also important to note that the pH meters should be stored when not in use with a few drops of probe storage solution on the end of the sensor. I think it is a kcl solution usually. You could also use the premix reference solution on the probes if you want and save the kcl purchase. Pick up some distilled water for mixing the powders and rinsing the probe (don’t use distilled or RO water to water the plants unless you are trying for something specific - filtered isn’t necessary either).

It sounds complicated and expensive but it really isn’t, and as Peter said, so many nutrient problems can stem from pH instead of the actual nutrients. Some people get lucky and their tap water is close enough pH but most of us have to use a little pH down solution (or whatever you personally use to increase the acidity) to get in the correct zone. Check GWE for reference material but in general you don’t want the exact same pH for every watering, it should wander a little as different minerals do better at slightly different pH, as long as it is in the zone. The zone I believe for soil is 6-7 and coco is 5.5-6.5.

I haven’t used a soil tester so I can’t say for sure but I don’t think they are the greatest. Maybe someone else can comment on that one.

Re the solution you already have, I don’t think you can use it. I’m not sure what is in it but I assume it is not a calibration solution it is just for indicating pH using colour. If you knew the exact pH of the solution and it exactly matched the pH expected by your pH meter you could possibly use it but that isn’t practical and your digital pH meter will probably be a 2 or 3 point calibration anyways (which is why they come with 2 or 3 sachets of powder at different levels). Note that different sensors are often calibrated with different pH level calibration solutions so you should buy the meter first and determine what types of powders (pH level) you need to calibrate the device. I think mine is a 3 point calibration using pH 4.0, pH 6.86 and pH 9.18.

Shopping list:
-PH meter
-sachets of powder or premixed solution for calibration (at whatever levels requested by the meter)
-probe storage solution (reference solution or specific probe storage solution, both should work)
-distilled water
-it helps to have storage containers for the solutions made by the powders. You shouldn’t reuse the solutions but you don’t need to use the full amount at once, just mix enough in a separate container to submerse the probe end.(EDIT - to be more clear, mix the solution in the container you will store it in and pour out a little to use as necessary in a smaller container and then toss it when done). Seal the remaining tightly and preferably in glass containers
-optional: a premixed reference solution (any pH is fine as long as you know what it is) to double check your calibration

They say you should calibrate about once a week but you can adjust as needed if you find it shifting off the mark or not.

DeadlyFruit has a good point about 3 significant digits on a pH meter readout. EDIT: I’m a firm believer in quantitative analysis. In plain language, I want numbers. Using a color chart to determine a strength of acidity or not, is qualitative analysis -> opinion. You see one color I see another.

Thanks PeterMatanzas! Ive tried growing herbs once, but I never invested as much time/ money/ and energy into them as I have this plant. DeadlyFruit- i added distilled water to the cart, would you recommend the powder packets or bottle solutions? Yes, definitely get an exact match. Being out by .01 is not a problem but otherwise aim for as close as you can get. There should be an exact match somewhere on Amazon. Any deviation will mess up the calibration.

You can get premixed if you want, and it will of course be easier to work with but it will be more expensive than powders, which is why I bought powdered for calibration solutions plus one bottle of a premix for reference. The bottles you have linked are only 125ml so they will be gone very quickly and you will have to buy more. I think the powders each mix up 250ml. Unfortunately it is an ongoing expense, but the powders will be significantly more economical.

I decided I may go for a higher pen and get this one- if I understand it correctly, I wont have to use a storage solution for it, unless it may be the preferred method anyway? it still requires the same pH levels as the pen you have, so those will do nicely, thank you! Im not sure how often I should test the pH, so I may do it like every week and a half or so unless the levels very a lot

The pen looks great.

I think I would probably still store it with some reference or storage solution, particularly if you are not using it for long periods between grows. My logic on this is based on how the meters work (I won’t get into it but it is an interesting read if you have time).

Not sure if you meant how often you would calibrate or how often you would test your water. I would calibrate weekly to start and then you can adjust based on experience more or less often. I test my water every time I give it to my plants, in part to see if I notice any calibration problems and also for peace of mind. These days I could probably do it a lot less frequently if I am not changing anything in my mix but I generally do it anyways.
 
I got the pen and the 4.0 pH solution + the packs of powder. I did mean test the water, not calibrate. Do you test the water before you give it to them or do you test the run-off water?
 
I check my water after I’ve added all the nutes before I have watered the plants. I usually don’t bother testing the runoff although technically you should. Personally I would start testing runoff if I saw any problems starting but you are probably better off testing both times for now, as you get used to things, but make sure you clean the probe after using in runoff water to be sure it doesn’t have dirt in it.
