I live in Canada, Calgary, which means I can grow outdoors like a civilized human. One of the downsides to this, however, is that 12/12 occurs around September 24th and although 12/12 isn't an exact science, I've found that photo-based plants finish a bit too late to beat the frost. At least the ones I try, cause I'm a big Sativa fan and some of the genetics finish really late.
Grow Autos I hear you scream. Solid plan, except I find my auto's are always so stunted when I grow them outside. Too many variables or I'm too stupid, etc. etc. Some of the autos I've tried are on such a tight timeline if you don't get maximum growth during those first two weeks, it really effects the final result. I'm keeping the autos in the tent with the big lights and the looooong days and the delicious hydro. So no more auto talk, it just makes me sad (I had such hopes for you blackberry).
So, I like the photos for outside, but I hate not being able to control the light; enter the shed. I have a small shed with space on the floor for a couple 7 gallon pots. I spent a few minutes one day inside the shed with expanding foam making sure all the big light leaks were taken care of. I set up an 8am and an 8pm alarm on my phone called "Wake up plants" and "Sleepytime for plants". I start my seeds on March 21 with the tomatoes and come June 21st, I "switch to flower" by locking the plants in the shed for 12 hours as per the alarms.
As you can probably tell by my description thus far, I'm a bit conservative, I like order, and lists. So, here's my summary of why I love my shed.

- Light control for flowering during the short-lived sunniest part of the year
- Security from midnight plant stealers
- Storm protection provided you get more than 5 minutes warning before the hail starts
- Frost protection (if required) during those freakish early frosts that happen up here sometimes
- Tiny bit of exercise moving plants twice a day
