When to top

Merry Christmas GWE!

I'm 3 weeks into my first grow. I'm growing in a stealth box that is 4' tall and has 1 Mars Hydro 300 watt LED light. I'm doing DWC using General Hydroponics 3 part nutrient system at the strength recommended here. My average daytime temp is 75-80 degrees with a RH of 40-70%. The PH of my water/nutrient mixture is typically just over 6.1. My plants look great to me but they aren't really growing tall. I'm wondering when to top them. I'm going to do LST in an effort to maximize my limited space. This first time I have 2 Northern Lights going. Next time I will only do 1 plant. Please take a look at the pics below and let me know what you think. Please remember that my main question is when to top and perhaps if you think that they look normal for 3 weeks of growth.

Happy Holidays from a rookie 😬

They look great for being 3 weeks old. I would say that you could right now cut off the top node of growth. One shows some nute burn, but only on lower leaves, not new growth, so not a problem there. I am not a DWC grower, but I am wondering if you should have spaced them further apart in your container, instead of side by side. It would give the roots and plants more room to spread out.

Yea. That's why my next grow will only be 1 plant. But for now, I want them in the center of the box so I can utilize the surrounding hooks for LST. I think I'm going to jump in and top my girls.

Thanks for your input.

I topped and then fim'ed the sprouts from the topping.. some of mine have a lot of under growth that I topped and fim'ed also.. I have a journal on this forum called "1st DWC grow journal" check It out... the pics are of my veg tent week 4 day 2 except one on far right is 10 days behind others

Hi Bigpapa

It's best to have 6 nodes on the baby before topping to the third node, if the plant is slow it could be weeks old before you see the 6 nodes not a good idea to use time on that question.

Just topped this one 3 days ago. I topped the 4th node. This is G13 Haze.

I notice that in the DWC, the plants seem really compact with nodes close together and dense leaf growth. Do either of you thin out some of that growth?

It's my first grow. But in my limited space I'm going to have to do some thinning out. But again, since its my first grow I'm reluctant to just jump right in. I'm going to have to do some reading first.

I think that would be a great idea. While you plants look healthy and lush, compare them to the pic kingfish posted. As the plant gets older too much foliage can be a nuisance and take away from the real stars, the buds.

Hey Papa,i haven't seen you around i think so i will also welcome you here! The ladies look wonderful!!Good luck on your grow first of all!!

I see all the good recommendations made here buy the family so i will just add that since you are going stealth and you have just two plants, first of all you should space them better and find a way to hook on the outer edges of your tank for LST because they will start chocking each other not only at root level but the branches as well!

I also topped my girls, cut them on 14th Day from seeds, they were just starting their 4th node and i topped down to the 2nd! Personally i didn't see any shock on them and now 5 days later (Day 19) i have 1" new tops starting from each of them!
