What happens to an auto that is switch from 12/12 to 20/4 ?

I don't know shit about auto's but it was my impression that auto's flower regardless of light change and that flower starts when it's life spand says it's time???.
if I have that right, couldn't you just leave an auto under 24 hrs of light and just let'er go till she's done????
