Weird drying problem

When I harvest i check bud density by giving a few of them a light squeeze. They always feel firm. Then I dry. I maintain 72°F @ 50% humidity. For some reason, during the dry, they often become loose and airy. Can someone tell me why?

Because they are drying.

When the moisture in the bud evaporates that causes the plant tissue that it was supporting to contract.

environmental physics comes to mind but I might be stoned, oh wait I'm sure of it now I'm stoned.

Try 60%RH if you can get it up there. They will still dry out just slower.
