umbrella roots

This is the root of a plant that had some problems last season. Now I know why it had problems. What did I do wrong? This has never happened before. Other plant roots did very well. I have an idea of what the problem is but I would like another opinion. This is a very poor picture. The roots look like an umbrella.

I see the problem... you're growing in a desert!

The picture looks like decent roots. I don't see what you mean by umbrella. You mean all the roots grew out the side, then down instead of just straight down?

Correct they grew round in circles then down the sides no straight tap root. The plant did not do as well as others with straight tap root. The desert is a tough place to grow but I love it. Best thing is low humidity most of the time and few insects. On the plants anyway.

Something obstructing them from growing straight down? Like a rock or something?

Maybe when you transplanted them out there something was wrong? I dunno DD... trying to help you retrace the grow...

Was it a clone or from seed

seed never use clones

I think maybe either it was too long in first pot before transplant or to shallow watering not long and slow enough.

Whenever you see a little rootbound when transplanting Try to shake and distress a little bit the strangled roots so they find a new path and avoid growing in circle

I'd go with if it was shallow watering it knew not to go down!
