Trimming before harvest

How much and how soon can I trim leaves before harvest. I have a really leafy plant outdoors in the ground, about 6'-7' tall. Will be ready within 2 weeks, I think. Some of the buds are maturing faster. Strangely, the tops are not as far as some of the lower and I plan on harvesting as they are ready.
 
Trimming is like hair cuts, everyone has their own style. What I do at that stage is cut off all of the big fan leaves. The biggest reason is that by that stage there is a high probability that bud rot is lurking. Removing the leaves increases air circulation around the plant, hopefully reducing the chance of rot. Also doing so leaves that part out of the way when harvest finally does arrive. Additionally, I believe that loosing the fans shocks the plant into survival. No big fans, what happened? Grow more. Can't. Grow the leaves that are still here, the flowers. There is nothing that says the entire plant needs to be harvested at one time. If there are buds that are ready and some that are not, take the ready ones and leave the rest for later.

Two weeks at least from harvest. Fan leaves stripped.

This is my outdoor plants. Not sure of the strain as it was given to me. I know the seed was from Homegrown. The 2 were in the same container and the roots had to be separated to transplant. A bit of shock, but recovered quick. We had an enormous amount of rain in July/August. Probably about 1-3" every other day for a full month. Did not give many nutrients and they were planted in the wrong soil, (I found out later) One has done well the other showed signs of root rot and nitrogen deficiency. It lost a lot of leaves, but somehow has tried to come back. Buds will be small, but hopefully still potent.

Well done on keeping those alive :) I quit growing in the ground it's a bother dealing with rain later in the season for getting a harvest in my area. Not sure where your at but do all you can to protect it until it's ripe. My neighbor had a canopy over there's they did'nt stake it down well enought yesterday i saw it blew over an had a big tear in it. Anchor the canopy LOL
