Tree cutting pots

I was just reading an article on starting tomato seeds indoors and came across something interesting. The author suggested transplanting seedlings into tree cutting pots which I have never heard of but are basically 4" starter pots that are 10"s tall. This is good for tomatoes because they will grow roots along a buried stem( called root primordia). Of course this got me thinking they would be great for starting cannabis seedlings. Then the roots would go almost to the bottom of a 5 gallon pots at transplant. Would that be a good thing? I think so but not sure. Does anyone have any experience with them? I don't have the tech knowledge to post the link but search Tree cutting pots if you're curious. Think I will give it a try. Only concern is I don't know how it will affect lateral root growth after transplant. Guess I'll find out

I may be confused but it seems like you would need extremely tall leggy seedlings to achieve lateral primordia in a 10 inch container. Wouldn't it also require multiple transplants? What would be the benefit of encouraging lateral root growth over linear? Let us know how it works out for you.

I had a couple of those got them from a master gardener plant sale they had trees in them small pencil size trees which i've since transplanted into the ground. I would'nt use them for MJ though i like to get those small 2x2, 3x3 or solo cup for vegging cause the roots do circle but stay together when putting into larger container. Just don't over wet the pot prior to transplant material falls apart . Good luck

As far as tomatoes go you transplant once into the 10 inch pot burying 3/4 of the stem. The roots quickly fill up the whole pot. Then when transplanting into garden you bury the rootball and 3/4s of plant horizontaly in a trench and roots grow down from there. That won't work for cannabis but I'm hoping the extra vertical space will keep the roots from circling the pot and getting rootbound.

When transplanting rootbound plants do you pop the rootball in the hole as is or do you try to separate the roots gently and spread them out before going into the new pot? This has been a debate between some friends lately. I'm a big believer in spreading those roots out, putting in a bigger hole then the rootball and gently filling in around them. It may shock them for a few days but I think it makes for a healthier root system in the long run. Would love to hear other people's opinion on this
