Total Newbie With Sativa Dominant Growing Questions

BREWINZ

New member
Greetings cannabis growing people. I was hoping you'd be able to help a first time grower. I decided to pick up the hobby for fun and my own personal use. In the legal state of MA, so why not? I plan on using 5 gallon smart pots to grow four (4) Purple Haze (Haze x Purple Thai) plants that I bought from the link below. I've decided to use a 5x5 Gorilla Grow Tent, two (2) Viparspectra PAR1200 1200W LED lights (534 max actual watts each), 6" 442 CFM inline fan, carbon filter, etc.

What I'm struggling with is the best way to train the plants. Should I consider ScrOG or just topping and LST? Any input at all would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to this forum BREWINZ - topping to start with for sure - all four the same strain one would think they will grow exactly alike so a scrog would be super. Well - don't expect them to grow the same way - but - you can make them grow the way you want. Scrog probably best way to go - you'll have lots of room for training plus enough light. So good luck.

Hey there Brewinz, I'm a total noob to the forum and am only on my second grow, but I have an opinion and im willing to share it :)

As this is your first grow, in a brand new optimal setup (well done for that btw), I would be tempted to just let the plants develop naturally without training. You don't seem to be restricted in height, so why not let them grow into an Xmas tree shape and just concentrate on fine tuning your grow space and observing how the plants develop.

Without a baseline, how will you know your training methods actually produce an increase in yield?

the reason for me posting, is because the major mistakes ive made with my plants have been by messing with them too much before I began to understand what the plants were telling me they needed. I hope this helps, but please feel free to ignore me too.

Have fun.

hey there welcome, just make sure to top them, a Christmas shape works best for very large rooms in sea of green, you want to take advantage of your light so an even canopy is what you look for. theres no way to know how the plants will behave but ive had sativas that keep on stretching after 10 weeks of flower. but i imagine being a modern hybrid that will not be the case, good luck

Thanks for the feedback! Am I wrong in thinking that I'm mathematically short of having enough light for 4 plants? Perhaps I'll just grow 3 plants. Anyone have any thoughts on mainlining? I don't know why, but ScrOG is really intimidating for me as a virgin grower.

Any clue as to what kind of yield I could expect? Website claims 19 oz/3ft^2 when grown indoors. I'm assuming this is under super ideal conditions with a professional grower that has a horseshoe up their... well...

What is the height of your tent?- I'm familiar with the Viparspectra PAR 1200 and they need a lot of height to get the full benefit without dialing them down.
I would simply top the plants at the 5th node and LST away from the center- along with, no defoliation -as you are growing a 70% sativa strain which generally do not need much if any.

Another option would be to top at the 5th node and continue topping to bush the plant out - not up.

You are right in the middle of not needing a second light to wanting one for better yields- so you will have plenty of light for 4-6 plants and certainly not require any more light.
I would guess, you can eventually obtain 24oz a grow

gr00ve-I disagree here with that type of LED an even top would yield much more. Top once with 5 nodes and then do a bit of LST to to hold down the two mains. I have not done Scrog.

You're right on. The PAR series needs a lot of clearance. That just happens to be my weak spot. The tent is 6'11". Height of a Sativa makes me nervous. That's why I was thinking of manifolding/mainlining 4 plants. I need to keep the height down and the yeild up. Perhaps I'm being overzealous for my first grow? I don't know why, but ScrOG makes me nervous as Hell.

Thank you for the great advice!

Hi there gr00ve, It depends on how tall a Sativa plant grows. One could easily outgrow sulker's tent. Topping will help control height. ;-}

Hi Brewinz and welcome to the forum! I bought my first seeds from ILGM and Purple Haze was among them! Bergman says their height is "average" on that webpage, so topping might work for you real well: https://www.growweedeasy.com/topping-fiming
You just have to work at training each cola into its own space so they don't stick together. You don't want that. Happy growing!

IMO- stay away from any manifold/mainlining-SOG/SCROG ideas until you get a few grows behind you- with successful topping and LST first.
Do not just let them grow out naturally as some Sativa's stretch 2-3 times their size!

Sound advice, thanks! I've never heard of the colas sticking together. I'll read up on that. Much obliged.

Purple Haze has grow height of 40"-60". My tent is 6'11" and my light must be 32"-40" above the canopy during flower if I don't want to dim the light. Height makes me very nervous...

Weed Pharma I'm going to take your advice and just go with topping and LST for the first grow. Chances are I'm going to have my hands full measuring PH and PPM anyway. I truly appreciate the guidance.

Topped @ 5th node, 3 photo plants-

Rock It, no information about height-
WWxBB was @32" max
Blueberry @ 89" max

Go to July 4th for pics of this photo grow: https://forum.growweedeasy.com/foru...-fastbuds-girl-scout-cookies-autoflower/page2

Topping and topping again,lst,supercroping thay all come into play with a Sativa grow. I grew some out, outside 2 years ago, and did just that and thay still grew to over 12’ tall😎 tie them down and good luck 🍀

I meant by making sure that each cola has its own space that the air should be circulating around each one separately. Good way to avoid mold. :-}
