Tincture question

Unfortunately (at least from an ethanol perspective) I am in Ontario so unless I cross the border into Quebec (I think they sell stronger stuff there) I can’t get anything stronger than 76%. I am not surprised your rig will do a more efficient distillation - mine is mainly intended for water distillation for drinking. You can control the temp but not much else. I suppose in the end you get what you pay for. Another case for getting a source turbo (or a rig like yours).
 
If you can't get 95% I recommend you try and make it to improve your product. Taking 76% to 95% should be an easy pass. So in the land of Canada and legal weed you can not have 95%, ain't that odd.
 
Yes it is a little strange we can’t get 95%. My hydrometer says I can distil it up to about 90% but not much higher. I don’t know if my hydrometer is not so accurate or my distiller is not efficient enough - I am betting it is the latter.
 
Are you adjusting the hygrometer reading for temperature? I guess 90% is good for a counter top distiller. Are you making a second pass with the distillation? If not, try that and take the first cut earlier and test that cut separately for a higher %.
 
I am adjusting for temp. I’ve tried making multiple passes but I think I may have just reached the limits of a countertop distillers efficiency. Good suggestion to take the ethanol from earlier in the distillation pass as the latter part likely has more water. Might be able to squeak out a couple extra %that way.

YES, that's exactly what I want to do! Hence the question of how much THC can be extracted in a given volume of Everclear?

My normal QWET extraction uses two alcohol washes of three ounces each, six ounces total. I typically reduce the resulting tincture by half or more to achieve a finished potency of 25 mg/ml. That works fine but half the alcohol is flashed off and wasted. Undesirable, but not enough to spend serious dollars on Turbo or other distillation gear.

Someone out there must know if there is a saturation point or a reduction in extraction efficiency as the ratio of herb to alcohol increases. That is something worth knowing and I'm on the hunt.

grouchyoldman I looked into the question of what the saturation point of THC in 95% ethanol would be many years ago. I can't find the source I found for the answer, but it resulted in a notation in the brain box that it is so high that it should not be a factor in a 50 to 100gm extraction if you are adding enough to fully saturate the plant material then add a little extra ethanol to fully cover and saturate the material even at low temperatures. In the vid he states he is using 10:1 ratio for dissolving a raw co2 extract in ethanol for the winterization process. Theses are unrelated procedures except that it illustrates how easily the ethanol will solve the oils you are after. Hope that puts some perspective on it.

Are you trying to reuse the same wash solvent to process another batch of plant material? Your intent is not clear. Using three washes will help to prevent leaving anything behind. Just keep everything cold as possible until the ethanol is separated from the plant material. I guess my point is unless you are talking about large batch process in a for profit operation, your extraction efficiency loss will be minimal. The advantage of doing it at home is you can afford to use extra ethanol and be confident in your percent of extraction.
 
quirk Looking to save $ on EverClear and save time on reduction. If it was potent enough I'd just use a warming mat, fan, Pyrex dish to reduce. ETOH sets off my pancreas. Thnx.
 
Ckbrew Can't afford everything to do that and don't know how to do it but if I can reduce to shatter with fan, etc then I can do a lot more with it using 'cooking' oils. oil-based tincture, edibles or dabs. I've vaped mine in the past but it's not ideal without the right equipment. One ml of etoh tincture was rough. If money wasn't an issue I'd buy a case of mango indica Surp.
 
I know hemp tincture has medicinal properties. I tried making my first liter of tincture using one cannabis bud. Once my son asked why the herb can be used for medicinal purposes, but alcohol is not. Then I found a very good article for him on https://gradesfixer.com/free-essay-examples/why-should-drinking-age-stay-at-21/ where there are many essay examples on why the drinking age should stay at 21. This was able to convince him to give up alcoholic drinks until he comes of age. Now, for the purpose of prevention, we use the tincture that I prepared. It doesn't taste good, but I hope for a positive healing effect.
