Shit, sorry brother. That's still gotta hurt a little. I'm glad to hear that you're mustering your shit, and getting ready to keep moving.

I too have stopped with the paper towel method, even though I enjoy actually seeing the root with my own eyes. I broke a couple taproots while planting them. I figure it's better to plant them before the taproot is exposed and vulnerable to clumsiness.

Now I soak the seeds in a shot glass for 12-24 hours, or until they sink without me poking it. Then I set the seed in either an Earth Plug (like a rapid rooter) or jiffy pellet in my trusty Costco Rotisserie Chicken Cloning Tray on a seedling mat, and have to have faith that the little helmet head will poke out in a few more days. I've also planted directly in soil with excellent results as @ FunkyButtLovin says.
 
Y'all saw that space alien crap I was doing with the straws, yeah? I'm not talking about sprouting and plugging like I did. You can use a straw to scoop up the paper towel seedlings. You can drop them in a hole in the soil without hurting a thing. If the roots go crooked, I have tweezers. A set of cheap ones from the Dollar type store. Bend the tips a little bit and I can pick up a seed without worrying about swishing it.
But that sprouting and plugging straw grown seeds is probably my next thing. Sprouting in a soil stuffed straw works great. Keeps it from falling over in the first stretch. No root damage when going to pot. They just grow out of the straw if a slit is run the length of it. You can have a tap root a few inches long when you plug. My Solo cup contestants are my thesis on the subject.
 
Farmall I'm hoping the durban stretch is about done, I'm running out of head room. I did find 2 balls early on-on the durban, so I'm watching it like a hawk. The balls were on the main stem like at the third node so we'll see. I'm convinced this is becoming a common occurrence due to breeding for fem and auto fem. I tossed a blue diesel early on when I found what appeared to be balls on the main stem, I maybe should have waited to see if and how the problem developed or resolved itself. Worse case some seeds, maybe even a cross with the blue widow. I can't say enough good things about the blue widow strain, grows short, very hardy tough to screw it up(knock on wood), fat solid buds, berry taste, good potency and it is such a pretty plant to grow. Pistils turn orange early (already starting at wk 4 end) and they keep turning orange throughout the grow (see my profile pic). Only way to determine when it's done is the trics. Well it appears the whiteout conditions have ended here, real high winds yesterday and last night. I couldn't even load up the stove with wood and shut it down, last night, already had smoked myself out of the house earlier in the day(lol). 17 this morning.
 
GreenState I just have to agree with that assessment. I did let it go fully thru harvest and pulled over 1000 seeds. Tossed several thousand more but how many can you keep? Yrs ago I added a heat exchanger plate to our basement wood stove and piped the heated water to my boiler...that was attached to a solenoid that’s kept the water hot and accessible for circulation to the baseboards upstairs. Had the boiler needed additional hot water, it could kick on the aquastat and then the boiler would fire to heat additional flow. That year since we had auto oil delivery based on heating degree days, we used less than 50 gallons. Two years later When we stopped using it, we ran out of oil on the coldest day that season since the oil company had based previous use on the low years. Glad you have the energy to keep feeding that stove... I do not any more...

But I remember two old old brothers in North Troy, Vt who lived in a log cabin ( not a new designed fancy cabin but a real 1700’s log cabin) the only heat these guys had was wood. Where they lived, frequently had temps averaging -35F and some days -45F for a week at a time. These guys were old time Vermonters I’m sure they were in their 70’s then and I was probably 20

Farmall My Dad just turned 87 and is looking forward to splitting and stacking some wood when they visit this summer! When I was young we used to split it by hand, maul,wedges it sucked :). He loves going out for 15 minutes or so, doing a wheelbarrows' worth and stacking it, then he putters around. He loves weedwhacking also, I won't let him use the chainsaw any more (g). I've burned less than 100 gals of propane so far (30-40 of it was when I went to FL), my backup is a wall mount Rinnai furnace, enough to keep the pipes and me from freezing, but not enough to fully heat the house. I think wood is just something that's in your blood, I rationalize doing it when I have downtime from my work, I feel less guilty. Of course my "down time" is 7 months of the year(lol)
 
Just took down this Lemon Skunk autoflower at 94 days and it was still wanting to stack but I stopped feeding it a couple weeks ago and now she pretty much stopped drinking and didn't have many good fans to keep her going strong. I also wanted the room it was taking up under the light so down she came and when I turned her upside down I found resin droplets like this formed on her underside. I'm excited to try this one!

The interesting thing about the durban, is while I found the 2 balls early in veg, it hasn't shown any further signs of herming, so we'll see.
Greenlivin I use a 400w mh light for veg and switch to a 400w hps repurposed commercial parking lot flood light for flowering.
 
GreenState my hats off to your dad.. my mother will be 90 but she ain’t stacking any wood. I can only say that I have a few wedges stuck in trees and logs around here since the 70’s. In fact. I had retrieved one about 5 yrs ago... no worse for the decades it spent out in the weather. Haha
