Terpenes - what do they mean?

Title was mostly for the alteration :) - the serious question is -Does a low fragrance suggest something in terms of quality of your buds?

Just harvested and have started to dry 2 of my 5 plants of Northern Lights. I'm rather amazed that the smell is not intense - definitely pervasive (you might say - sticky).
We could smell the grow through our walls from the attached outside grow shed to the inside rooms - and yes the walls are well insulated and built - so this really surprised me.
BUT the fragrance is pleasant, not overpowering, just a nice organic smell. My wife says it's leaning to pine, whereas I think more earthy or hoppy like mushrooms or fresh IPA.
She has a better smeller than me, after my years in boatyards and woodworking shops. No skunkiness at all.

The point of my question though is that since the intensity is pretty mild, does that give a hint as to the quality of the buds or the potential effect?

There is still much needed research into the relationship terpenes have on the characteristics when smoked. It has been suggested that terpenes may play a similar role in cannabinoid modulation such as that with CBD with cannabinoid receptors.

I know i have had very mild aromatic buds that still knock ya socks off so its definitely not a difinitive factor but possibly a contributing one.
 
Also, they will probably gain more smell back, during the curing process. I've also gotten pretty darn high, off of weed that didn't have a whole lot of smell.
 
So terpenes are fascinating, they each give differing effects. For general research look to aromatherapy, THC though as far as I’m aware is odorless, however I’ve never had the opportunity yet to smell 99.99% THC yet. Your nose will tell you what’s best in the moment, though if you are looking for medical reasons I’d start with aromatherapy research and seed banks that offer terpene testing results
 
The NLights I've grown, all smelled like pineapples, it smells lots better an stronger after they been in jars awhile like GreenhouseEffect said.
Around my house Nlights, is a favorite,great buzz.
 
Thanks all. There is some good reading ahead and sniffing too (among other experiences :) )! Never even heard of Ed Rosenthal - his photos alone are worth a visit to his blog.
