Smoking Powdery Mildew Laden Pot

The testing required here is pretty rigorous and cost about $370 for up to 10lbs per harvest per strain. I'm glad there's pesticide testing but as a small grower who doesn't use any non organic pest control and with a small harvest it stinks. I do appreciate the safer products being sold in dispensaries, no doubt.

He also says in his latest book that once it appears on foliage "at this point, the systemic disease has been inside the plant a week or more, and the disease can be only arrested by external treatments - but not eliminated"
so basically you can clean the outside with H2O2 but it's still within the plant tissue.

and he also says "Medical patients or anybody with respiratory ailments should not vaporize or smoke moldy cannabis"

There is a product out now from BIG AG seriously downsized into smaller 5-gallon bottles, which I was told by a friend is hands down amazing... it is suppose to kill systemic mold because of how it works, all in all he had to go sit in a meeting for a few hours listening to all the things on this company's products, what they do, how they do it, etc... and told me it is suppose to basically kill all the mold from the inside out. I don't know but from what I do understand from what I read on it I was extremely excited to try it... until I saw the price tag... judge it for yourself

BioSafe Systems Oxidate (Zerotol) 2.0 Bactericide Fungicide

OxiDate® 2.0 uses peroxygen chemistry – rapid oxidation that kills a wide range of bacteria and fungi on contact. This product works as a knockdown control for

Because of its mode of action, there can be no resistance developed with continued use. It is exempt from pesticide residue considerations and is EPA registered.

@ Greenthumb - Thanks for sharing that. In all my years growing up in NorCal I've never heard of anyone doing this. I was always taught that mold equaled a loss. Nice to know there might be an option to save the buds.

Actually I do know it was directly in regards to the plant and he did advise me on a couple of that company's products... I had a plant, a very special plant to me which got powdery mildew and started having issues from that point forward. Over time I'd become more concerned about ways to try to save it or heal it, I would battle the white powdery mildew, kill it off for at least a week or two of no signs and then... it would spring up as humidity levels climbed do to environmental causes which raised the RH. I thought perhaps it was best to cut it down into a clone or two, get rid of the mother itself and try to keep the plant going because I thought I just wasn't reaching some hidden area of the mold. Come to find out even the clones would immediately become infected the minute they started to push out the first signs of roots the plant would die from white powdery mildew within a couple of days, water cloning or various types of soil medium cloning as well.

In the end I learned that the white powdery mildew is and thrives within the inside the plant, someone here showed a plant stem cut, the inside was dark and mushy and commented it was the mold... Okay, sure I will buy that, I saw similar on my cuttings of another plant which had these issues... So how I learned of the products was to first treat the plant to kill the mold, then to double up on the treatment at the time of the cuttings by giving it a quick dip per the directions on the bottle for the companies chemicals and that it would solve the issue. The person whom I deal with at GrowersHouse had a similiar issue at the time, and he was buying the products in a couple of days to try it himself... It worked for him, my plant didn't live long enough to me to give it a try myself, so I can't speak to it... but like you said... sometimes knowing means others can do more researching and maybe find more information and answers than some others of us. All it in all it sounds great, amazing and puts hope at the end of the tunnel, but I won't know until next fall because that is when I struggle with the molds.

Greenthumb I really appreciate all this information you have supplied us with. A very interesting discussion. One question:

Surely Jorge C. would know that PM is systemic; I am not doubting what you say at all, I'm just wondering what the heck Jorge was doing recommending the H2O2 bath!!! I'm confused by that.

From what I gather based off the title of it and everything he says, it sounds like he is going on the bases that the mold is on the outside of the bud and thus and H2O2 bath will kill it all off. But being that mold is systematic that has always left me thinking that even if you kill the mold on the outside of the bud, you would still have it inside the bud... perhaps I am wrong, or perhaps Jorge just had a bit to much to smoke over the years... honestly I don't know.

Seriously a deep Thank You, I have honestly never read the first bit of Jorge C's work to date, never watched another video, seen his blog or anything else relating to him... I had this arguement over powdery mildew before with some people, I know what I know from experience, reading, researching, etc... but when I was shown that I was wrong based off from a person with clearly more experience and knowledge than me... and I so strongly disagreed with his point and opinion of it, I simply refused to read any of his works up to this point. I've heard plenty of people say he is a great author and trustworthy, but after that one video of his I just never could trust him myself. It is nice to know in his final work he did come to change his mind, but even now I still find myself questioning what other thoughts did he put out there in his work only to change his mind on? Perhaps I should do some more looking into him and his work.

I'm just surprised that he hasn't come out with another video that flat out denies what the H2O2 one claims. He may not be able to pull all the copies of that video, but he should be publicizing the latest information.

In many ways I think we can say that cannabis "science" is still most definitely in its infancy. This is just the beginning of a real scientific grasp of what goes on. GREENTHUMB IS VINDICATED.

I learned a long time ago, do not argue with idiots because even with the facts and proof on your side, they still scream "alternative facts" without any basis or proof. I agree with you he should come out with another video contradicting himself or pull the copyrights of that one video and then YouTube would pull it across the board. On the basis of cannabis "science" being in its infancy, yes and no... what can we really do with cannabis, I was in high school when a scientist stated "We know of 1,000,000 things to do with the cannabis plant right now and we haven't even begin to touch the tip of the iceberg on what we can do with it." which was brought out by our teacher. As we looked more deeply at how cannabis can make plastics, oil based things, and even gasoline or a type of fuel our combustion engines can run off from, and the list went on... However on the other hand things like "powdery mildew and molds" are well know to science and that is why we know as much as we do about it.

Ed Rosenthal in his one book states quite clearly "You can not smoke any cannabis that has been hit with mold, but you can turn it into products which will be eat, but you can not turn it into anything that will be smoked. At some place I know its even clarified, you can press the plant for oil, but you CAN NOT turn around and smoke that same canna oil, but you could use it in baking, etc." and that I would agree with. Because it all boils down to you do not want mold spores entering your lungs at any point, you can get seriously sick long term and its nothing to play around with. Of all the things I have learned my painful lessons with in life mold has been one of those things, and thus I know what I know when it comes to it, I won't argue with someone on it... but I know when I am right when it comes to that subject.

Well, GT, perhaps with your expertise, you should seriously consider writing to all the major outlets like High Times, RollItUp, 420magazine, etc etc etc with an artice that flatly contradicts the JC video. The article would ideally trace the controversy back as far as possible, lead up to JC's video (I wonder when he made that? Clearly it's recent), and then go BEYOND that video with the scientific evidence. AND I will personally write to JC and tell him he should get rid of that video.

I think it's our responsibility to at the very least present the information to the public--which we are doing a little bit here. But this information needs to get out there big time. I can't stand the thought of thousands of folks smoking PM-laden weed; that's not to say that I can avert it, but I should try.

I'd be glad to help. PM me if you want to work on an article.

This subject is plenty complex and believe me far beyond the scope of just a video on YouTube and as more States and even countries such as Canada continue to change and adopt new laws regarding cannabis production this issue has been seriously looked at and you wouldn't believe how far this is going and how much it matters moving forward. Oregon for one example has passed laws you can not have ever sprayed a cannabis plant with a pesticide or a fungicide in its entire lifetime, on top of laws like that you have to pass mold tests which I've heard and read 80% of mold failures didn't even show signs of mold on the bud. One of the two only companies allowed to grow in Canada is taking it seriously enough they built a cannabis production place, which they call the Space Station. Commercial cannabis growers are already seeing this as the way its going to completely wipe out every closet grower out there, and a large portion of the black market cannabis.

First commercial growers have to produce a better product, and now they are in the fight to produce it cheaper and better, with new laws such as no mold, no pesticides, no fungicides ever used on the plant, people are going to be faced with a cheaper better quality at reasonable prices, cheaper than you can grow it and thus the issue gets wiped out.

When you talk trying to reach people about mold, you are asking the guy with a couple of plants to toss out his whole crop and have nothing to smoke or something to smoke. You are dealing with people still asking "which lighting is the best?" and not even controlling their humidity, etc... and suddenly you want them to take something as serious as not smoking moldy cannabis and get them to think they can't grow their own bud any way they want, they need to filter the air, control the temps, humidity, etc... to prevent moldy bud. If you want to reach people you have to do it with prevention and nobody cares about that, because they just want to grow cheap bud and when you try to tell them things outside of that nobody wants to hear you.

To prove the point pick up any good quality book written on cannabis growing, and it will discuss lights, nutrients, CO2, humidity, temps, and everything else you need to know to grow the best bud, and it will dial in specific numbers. I bought a High Yield Cannabis book once, because it was suppose to tell you everything you ever needed to know to grow the biggest and best buds ever... I read it from cover to cover comparing it to my basic cannabis growing books... and everything, and I mean everything was the same, the temps, humidity levels for when, light colors, etc... I was so pissed, because no matter how you want to argue it, you always have the basics and from there only minor tweaks to your growing area to get perfect bud every time, and yet seriously who listens to that and how many times do you repeat the same things to the same people time after time?

Ok! I'm all in favor of NO PESTICIDES etc. with cannabis; that is a policy that makes perfect sense to me. What you're saying makes me realize that while growers may be able to cultivate cannabis just about anywhere in the world, not all outdoor conditions are favorable to producing the results we seek. Farmers of all types have faced similar crises or loss of crops when the weather takes a bad turn. As for Canada's Space Station, this may not be such a bad idea, although I don't think it will ever wipe out closet growers because this IS an art form, and those of us who wish to cultivate our own won't stop perfecting our own techniques. As Nebula said, it is becoming more like micro-brewing the perfect beer in your own home.
If cannabis were legal where I live right now, and I could go and buy top quality bud from the pot store, I'd still grow my own. I have invested in the grow equipment and I deeply enjoy it as a hobby and a creative act. Plus, I have always loved working with plants, and this is the most special plant I've ever worked with. As for the guy who's had a "touch" of mold and doesn't want to get rid of his crop, well, folks gone do what folks gone do. Private growers will continue to have varying degrees of knowledge and expertise about what they are doing; they will continue to produce bud that will range from dangerous, to so-so, to top notch. This is inevitable. Some of us will become masters and many won't. You can't be a dull-witted person and do this well, that is for sure. There are too many factors to balance and juggle.
It reminds me in many ways of how I perceive my students: some have never learned how to juggle multiple factors--let alone five times as many factors involved in the process of earnng As in all 5 classes they are taking--; some don't have the foresight to figure out how to improve their juggling abilities; some are satisfied with mediocrity; some can't stand hard work and challenges; etc. Different abilities, different priorities. It may be true that many growers won't care about all the factors you mention, and moldy bud will get harvested, gifted/sold, and smoked; to me it's clear that not very many of my students at all really care about honing their intellectual skills by really learning to be excellent students. I accept that most will settle for mediocrity, because they don't want the challenge of striving for excellence. I see it as the way of the world: a relatively small group of true masters or experts or geniuses exists in any endeavor involving this kind of complexity.
As for the book you read and compared to your other pot books, lemme just say this: throughout my career, I have seen so many freaking mediocre textbooks in my field it's just not funny. Whenever there's money to be made, you'll see this phenomenon. I have ended up using mostly my own materials because of the weaknesses and flaws I find in the commercial products. Yeah, like you said at the start: don't waste your breath arguing with idiots. Write your own book, share your knowledge with those who are smart and receptive enough to appreciate your hard work and insights, and don't cast your pearls before swine. They just won't know how to appreciate your pearls of wisdom.
As for Jorge, I'm still going to write to him and confront him on this PM video. I ain't tryna change the world here, though...

I read what you said and then I've spent the past few hours really thinking about it, you are 100% right, whether Jorge hears me or not, like you I think I am going to write him and spend the time putting together some facts and figures to back up my points on molds. He posted the video, he needs to debunk his own claims as being wrong, I'm sure you and I won't be the first to tell him... but hey how can we complain about something if we aren't willing to put forth the effort and work to try to change it. Sometimes a single man can change the world or at least change the minds of a larger volume of people... we don't know what might happen, until we put forth the effort to make the attempt... I will try to work on something to him soon.
