Smelling weed et al.

I've rarely been able to pick out many of the nuances of the myriad of smells that comes from dried/cured flower, or any weed product. Only in a few limonene rich, live-resin strains. Weed in a jar has one of three weed related smells: bright, musky, or my traditional idea of what 'marijuana' smells like.
I've been trained to shove my nose in a bag or jar or resin so close I'm inhaling it. But no more!
When I open one of my jars of home-made about 10" from my nose, I get the same smell the live plants had. Super potent. Nose in jar smells good, but not like it should.
Same-same for the three jars of home-grown I harvested a couple weeks ago. 17g total going for a long cure, starting today. Spent a week burping them. Each time I opened the jar 10" away from my face I could smell the growing flower. Again, good close up.
So, there you have it, my folkensteins. If it doesn't smell flowery or berry-y or diesel-y from a distance, it's poop weed.

Poop weed.

I can barely, if at all ,distinguish the fragrances or the tastes that are described in the seed catalogues. It all smells and tastes like weed to me. Some is stronger or muskier than others but it all smells and tastes like weed to me. I would never select a strain for it's alleged taste or fragrance profile. To me this is all marketing to move new strains. But, if some growers get a kick out of it, well more power to them.

All I do is vape. I can taste bubblegum and like it. Fuel is so-so, don't care either way. Sometimes there's a detergent/hops taste, don't like that. Currently have some strawberry cough, can't taste strawberry though maybe a little banana. Sometimes I get a little throat tickle. Current grow smells awesome but I can't call out any nuances in it.

I love smelling my home grow. If you blindfolded me and let me sniff any of the 5 strains I currently have on hand I am 100% confident I could name them. Am much less confident I could name them from their smoke. Also, my wife says ALL my strains smell like skunk. I think it must be something genetic like liking cilantro. I've heard people talking about "skunk weed" etc and never understood it. I've smelled skunk (animal) and I do not see any likeness whatsoever. Both my wife and I love cilantro so it's not the same gene that decides that...

When my face is in my tent with four strains going, I don't get a chance to smell the individuals until it's harvest time. Once in the jar, all the terpenes hit me in the face.

Personally, I am just now after over two years, detecting subtle differences. I move my plants around during watering. This brings them up close and personal. I only have a general idea what I'm growing. I think a Zombie Death Fuck, a couple of Acapulco golds and something else. One of them smells fruity, a couple waft mint and a couple evoke floral.

I'm almost a month into flower. I'm anxious to press my flower into dabs, to see if I might further differentiate. Geeks gotta geek.

Fat Banana (RQS) has an unbelievably delicious smell when you grow that stays with it in the jars too. It’s very distinct once you’ve grown it you won’t forget it. I pop a seed of it almost every grow to keep the supply going. I’m also discovering that dry trimming is by far the best at retaining that sweet smell and taste. I find it almost seems to speeds up the curing process too.
