Size of Planter?

I am new to growing my own. The friend who got me started insists that the pots I am going to use aren.t ever half bgi enough. He is using a type of bag which requires between 3 to 4 cubic feet (or more!!!). The pots I intend to use hold a 1/5 cubic ft bag of foxfarm ocean forrest potting soil with some room left over. I have tried to find some reference to size. The pots that i have seen in pictures do not appear to be larger than the 1.5 cf pots. Is it necessary to get bigger or am i on the right track??? Thnaks

Sorry - not only am i new to growing - I'm am even newer to bloging or whatever this is called. The pots are plastic. If your gallon reference is equal to a gallon of liquid then the pots are well over 5 gallons. I would bet closer to 7 or 8 gallons. Yes?/No?

My volume convertor says 0.2 cu ft = 1.5 gals. 1 cu ft= 7.5 gal
When I've grown in soil, the plants seemed happiest in 5-7 gal bags.
