Add nutrients to water (always add nutrients first)
Test the pH of the water with drops or a PH Pen. The pH should be between 5.5-6.5 pH in hydro.
Use PH Up or PH Down to adjust the pH to the correct range if needed. You may need as little as a few drops to adjust because a little goes a long way especially with the PH Down.
Test again to make sure the pH in the right range
Pump out your old water as needed (I use a battery powered pump with two rechargeable D batteries), then pump or pour your new water into your reservoir
The pH may rise and fall after it starts bubbling in the reservoir, depending on your nutrients and starting water. I always recommend testing the pH again an hour later or at least by the next day just to make sure the pH doesn't need to be adjusted again.
At first it's a little annoying to figure out how much PH Up or Down to use, but after doing it a few times you'll be able to know exactly how much to add to your particular water to get the pH in the right range. You'll "get to know" your setup and it will take a lot less time and effort! One last tip is to make sure to keep your reservoir topped off (so the water level is always about 2" under the net pot) because that will help stabilize the pH.
I wrote a little tutorial about managing pH if you're interested!
