Mil issue from field/sea rations. Held waterproof matches. I got it and the P-38 can opener. Vietnam era. The brass ones were sent to recycle (DRMO). I seen 5 gallon buckets full in the service during the 80's go to the smelter.

I swear I've seen those if not actually had one in my hand when I was in the army. Pretty nifty little containers.
I'm of the MRE and generation, not field/sea rations, not matches. Had plenty of P-38's but we MRE generationers bayonetted our meals open and heated in magnesium/iron pouches.

I was the chauffeur for the 101st DISCOM command sergeant major (and sometimes the commander). Never spent a night in the field or a day with dirty hands. Never worried about keeping my matches dry because I never got unduly wet.

u.s.m.c. , slept outside more than in. 2 combat tours, 3 failed pee tests. we got the mre's after the army was done eating them. very good times

I was surprised at the comments about this item. had it since I was 12, it used to belong to my father who used it to hold matches for camping back in the day before bic lighters. It is one of those things that just belong to you and follow you around. It was once lost at uni in 1979, gone for 2 months. My then girlfriend spotted someone with it at high noon on the quad. Said where did you get that? Found it at high noon months ago. She reclaimed it for me ant returned it. I was distraught about loosing my marbles back then.

a close up of the writing on it

I remember, now. It wasn't the army. It was Boy Scouts. Maaaan... I really fokking hated the Boy Scouts. I suddenly have mixed feelings about your tin.

Like everything, good and bad. I had my first public drunken puking episode and first joint toking while camping with them.
