Crossed stipules usually means it's a female. However if they're not crossed it could still be female. I've yet to see a male with crossed stipules, but I wouldn't be surprised if that happens sometimes, too :)

Hmm, it's a little tough to see with these pictures. The one with crossed stipules I'd guess is female, but I'm having a tough time getting a clear look at the preflowers. Sometimes it helps reduce blurriness to take the picture with brighter light, and paradoxically, sometimes it helps to move the camera a little further away for better closeup shots. I'm not sure if you saw our preflowers page, but it has tons of pictures of really small preflowers to compare with :)

The indica I'm almost sure is female! It's got crossed stipules and the pre-flowers look really pointy. With the other pics I feel like it's harder to tell without seeing closer :)

Thanks for the info,I have sure learned ome things in this grow. Had 2 males so far ,what upset me was the other indica was a male but it is sure smoking pretty good. I t beats having nothing.Takes the edge off my chronic pain.I got some white widow feminize and nebula auto feminize waiting to plant. Thanks for all the help, sure has made this easier.

What part of the male plant have you been smoking, if you don't mind my asking? I'm always interested in hearing additional ways to use the plants!

I dry out the leaves and put them in a pipe and enjoy. You dont get the real strong high but if your in pain or just want to forget about things for a while it does me fine. To me it is better than nothing and why throw away something that helps until the main harvest comes in. I leave it alittle damp seems to smoke milder.

This is fascinating, as I was only told males are worthless unless you want to pollenate. So you actually got some pain relief from the leaves of male plant? If that is the case, then I would think the leaves from female plant would be even better.

NebulaHaze , you say that in your experience crossed stipules is almost a guaranteed female? I realize it is not 100% foolproof, but you feel pretty confident with that statement?

Thanks for sharing all of this with us smokey!

Ive never grown regulars so it's very helpful for me!

You know where they say that with regular seeds you have a 50/50 chance of getting a female. Well, our odds were way lower. 5 female, one of which hermied (or accidently got pollenated) and 13 males. Really sucked because we had transplanted all 18 into 2 gallon buckets. I won't say that I will never do it again, but with the seeds I have coming plus what we already bought, should have enough for two years. I tend to go overboard when I get enthusiast about something. LOL

Yes. I've never yet seen an example of a plant with stipules that were very crossed but ended up being male. I definitely would want to do more testing to put my full confidence behind that, but I feel confident saying it's a very strong sign! Also, lots of females don't have crossed stipules, so a *lack* of crossed stipules doesn't necessarily mean anything.

However, I'm not the best expert on this. I have grown almost exclusively with feminized seeds, and so although I've seen hundreds of female plants, pretty much all of my experience with sexing male plants has come from years of looking at pictures from other growers. I would really love to hear from someone who has lots of experience working with regular seeds, and who has sexed tons of plants in person :)

4 females, 1 hermie, 13 males.... Those are terrible odds! I'm sorry that happened to you! I remember there was a post from a little while ago where we talked about variability of gender with regular seeds: http://forum.growweedeasy.com/forum...nt-gender-is-a-seed-male-or-female-from-birth

Just curious, did your plants go through a lot of environmental or light stress during the first few weeks, or did they experience unusually hot or dry temperatures? Jorge Cervantes has said that stressful or hot/dry conditions could net him up to 70% male plants from regular seeds! It would just be interesting to know if your experience matched up with that :)
