SOIL Seedlings show little growth

I've been having this problem for a while now through a variety of strains and seed banks. So, I guess it's me. Although this last batch from Ethos seeds has been the worst I've ever seen. It only happens with my indoors crops. Outdoor crops I never notice this problem.

These seeds germinated just fine, paper towel method and distilled water. 5 for 5. Some weird strain called Fanta Sea RBX. I only bought them because they were mostly wedding cake and I've had really good luck with that in the past.

Anyhoo, these two photos show a 19-day difference. As you can see, that's pitiful growth. Maybe the biggest one could pass as normal, but the smaller ones are pathetic. They start off sort of yellow, sort of stunted, and stay that way for nearly two weeks barely pushing out one set of leaves. It was only after I started in with the CALMAG that they took on greener tones and began to grow more or less normally. Still slow but starting to catch up.

Which is what normally happens to me. They sit there doing nothing, for weeks, very frustrating. Then they finally pop and bang, they go ape. Growing just fine, healthy, and fast. But those first few weeks are like they are in stasis. I am certain they are NOT being overwatered. Soil is moist but not squishy, lots of good air flow all around.

Does anyone else have this problem?



Simple setup.

5x5 tent
Vivosun 2000 LED
Hurricane fans blowing from top to bottom for air circulation
Soil I mixed myself from my garden. Very healthy, lots of mycorrhizal fungi.
CALMAG I mix myself.
Water PH always regulated to 6.5

RH 65-75%
Temps 72-78°F

No other additives.

Maybe your soil is too hot.
Especially if they are autos ?
if photos try starting in a solo cup size pot with seed starter mix
if autos same advice but start in final container with a 1/2 gallon of seed starter soil surrounding he seed to get it started. Some do 1/3 of the top of the pot with starter soil and hotter soil bottom 2/3 when the plant can take it
If you can buy a bag of something proven to work well with cannabis this could help you rule out soil problems

I suffer from similar lack of patience.

I dont get much yellowing but I put it down to indoor large pot syndrome.

Rootsruler posted an article about root growth and the relationship to the water table maybe 18 months ago which could explain what we are experiencing.

I think it's pretty normal when starting out in large pots.

I grow in coco.

Thank you. Soil may be hot, but I'd be surprised. I often wondered if its because I sow directly into their final containers that they are slow to catch up. Sorry I can't delete the other posts, I tried. Hops the mods delete them. It was so laggy when I tried to post my thread hung for 20 minutes, erroring out every so often, so naturally I tried again. Then a third time. Ugh.

Interesting. Just confirmed what I wrote to another commenter that I wonder if sowing them directly into big pots is to blame. Good to see there is some evidentiary anecdotes to support that theory.

Lots to consider. IMO . . .

I sprout seeds and immediately plant each in a separate, peat Jiffy Pellet. When roots emerge at the bottom, they are repotted into 4" pots of 50/50 coco/perlite, and into one gallon nursery pots when roots emerge from the 4" pots. When roots come out of the one gallon pot, the plants are ready for final placement either fabric pots of coco/perlite or straight into modified, pH adjusted outdoor garden soil. This establishes a strong root system throughout the grow medium. Never had one die.

I would never mix unsterlized, outdoor garden soil for use in a grow tent. Too much a chance of introducing disease or insect pest eggs.

Since you said CalMag helped, I would not eliminate a pH problem or nutrient insufficiency. Particularly since your outdoors grows do ok.

And here's a thing about homemade soil.
It only takes one inadvertent additive or misstep to change what you've done in the past. Something you don't know about. Not saying that's the case. Just that if you've been doing the same thing for years and are just having a problem, maybe you didn't do exactly the same thing and don't realize it.

Entirely possible, no argument there. In fact this last batch I made is nothing like any prior batches, just because of the geography and terrain in which I gathered the organics. Certainly, a good point to consider.
