[Would roots starting to grow on stems above the soil level be an indication of the plant getting 'root bound'?] My two Summer Lemons 5' & 6' are in 3 gal. pots,Soil 2"s below pot rim. I filled them up with additional soil. I don't want to disturb them by replanting at this stage. Potted 5-12. Trying to keep outside, weather permitting. No other problems.

No. If you are talking about those little green nipples that grow from the stem close to the soil, it's common in my experience. Don't do anything or pile soil up around the trunk and those roots will grow.
I'm not saying you are not root bound. Just that nipple roots are not a sign of being root bound.
 
Why not topped? I was originally going to try in ground grow but changed my mind and left them in pots to be able to move them in case of bad weather. A lot of thunderstorms this yr., in under the lights and out into the sunshine when possible. Just an old fart having funnnnnnnnnnn;)
 
I had no idea weed grows adventitious roots! And you're not supposed to do anything to encourage them?

(With tomatoes, every time you pot them on from seedlings on up, you're encouraged to plant them deep to encourage a better root system. Some people even plant them several inches away from the stakes and bend them over so the stem comes in contact with the dirt for the same reason.)
 
Supposed to? Meh. If you pile soil/coco up around them, they will grow like the roots the plant already has. If you do nothing, they will do nothing. It's a 'good to' idea, not a 'supposed to' idea. Same-same transplanting weed and tomatoes except you don't always want to trim the bottom branches of weed.
If you pin a plant, any of the trunk that is touching soil/coco will grow roots.
 
Very cool. Had no idea they did that. I've read chatter about enhancing root system development, but I've seen nothing about encouraging adventitious roots, despite it being a zero cost way of getting there.
