Or ponzi314 you could just skip the whole soil thing and grow in coco coir. I have found it to be easier than dirt. There is the cost thing though cause you won't be able to dig up any coco from your yard. If you haven't already, check out this link for soil nutrient recommendations.

I have to 2nd coco as the superior growth medium It's easier and more forgiving than soil, but does cost a lot unless you want to do the work of re-hydrating your own.

ponzi314 the coco I use has no nutes or living soil at all. I have to provide all the food, but I like it that way because I'm a control freak! This is the exact stuff I use:

That's top shelf medium. 70 /30 mix , Been mixing coco and perlite since i started indoor. I still love me some dirt. to many bugs. LOL
